The scale of the whole thing gives me pause - looks like it's built for someone the size of Dani Pedrosa.

Yeah. I want to like it but there is something off about it.
I think your right about the scale. Picture a big dude on it.

Not quite there for me, but a few changes and I'd be right into it..
Funny how many despised the XS650 when it first came out, myself included.
But oddly enough, it has very much stood the test of time, to the point of my suggesting to one of our lads that he consider it as a platform for his first bike and build.
Very versatile in terms of style of build possible, in addition to simply making one roadworthy in more or less original condition from an externally visual point of view.

The depicted build very nicely holds the Yamaha colour scheme.

If I could find one on the auctions for $650, you wouldn't be able to hold me back..

that's the stock swingarm on the KTM dirt bikes of that era
