I have an 03 919 with 16k, schedule calls for valve adjustment... there is no clatter or any other sign that anything is amiss. how important is this, and any idea as to cost?
Yo Dog-I have an 03 919 with 16k, schedule calls for valve adjustment... there is no clatter or any other sign that anything is amiss. how important is this, and any idea as to cost?
Nah - don't feel bad dude. I made the decision to sell it. Been unemployed for going on 6 mos. now and the 919 was at the top of the "things to sell" list. And, as you saw when you were at my house, I've got other hobbies to keep me occupied. Got a couple of prospects in the works now so when things get better $-wise I'll probably end up getting another bike. Next time it will most likely be a cruiser - definitely a Honda. Maybe a VTX but I always liked the Shadow Spirit 1100 which they discontinued. We'll see. In the meantime I'll keep hanging around here and enjoy seeing updates on how you and the 919 are doing. You should post a couple of action pics of yourself here or on your website!yo dave, I almost feel guilty for you being bikeless, but I'm sure that you will come up with something to blow my socks off... see ya out there.
Oh, and by "unusually short intervals", I meant in the 1-2k miles range. As crazy as it sounds I would change it whenever I noticed it had become dark in the window.pretty sure someone had a 919 motor with 77k miles on it.... 6k oil change intervals and never adjusted the valves.... needless to say @ 16k i wouldnt go tearing into it if you dont hear excessive valve train noise.
The frame actually has plenty of clearance. You do need to remove the coils and tie them back out of the way and remove the section of coolant hose on the right side. The comment on the extra hands getting the valve cover back on really has to do with keeping the gasket in place and putting some sealant on the half moons on each side of the valve cover as you set it down.MarylandMike, I appreciate the pic!
• Does the frame give you adequate clearance to do the job? You mentioned an extra set of hands really helped to get the valve cover back on, so the frame comes to mind - I was just wondering if that was cause for concern or if it was something else.
• Also, did you just use a factory service manual or did you just wing it ?
Curious as to how much previous knowledge/experience you had before diving in so I can decide if I want to do it myself or not.
