Somebody has put an image of this up somewhere already, but I missed the fact that it came from Honda.

So, proper double seat, USD forks, SSA, low pipe, re-tuned donor engine, good-looking wheels - is this the 9'er, redone? Mods not required?

My thoughts - yeah, it does still have the classic Honda long wheelbase and it seems to incorporate elements of the 919, but the styling is more classic 80s. There's a lot of elements of the DOHC CB-***F models' styling there, particularly in the slab-sided almost-letterbox tank, the 'ducktail' rear with non-wraparound taillight and the dual forward mounted horns. I wonder how good the headlight will be on it.


Also, note the very large resonator/catalytic converter on it, and it looks like they tried to cut costs by removing side covers in favor of extending the rear cowl/fairing forward. I would strongly advise anyone buying one of these (should it make production like this) to get a spare cowl or two. The engine is up surprisingly high for a Honda, too - wonder if there's more than usual down in that deep sump.

I just can't see the tank, I think the shape of the tank ruins the lines of the bike. It needs a more aggressive stance. Didn't check the numbers on the performance/weight or other things, but it just doesn't have the aggressive stance.

I disagree. It looks just fine to me, the bodywork's lines are very much adapted from that of the CB900F (and other -Fs) of old:





The tank style is the same as used on so many 80s -Fs, including the 250s and 450s. The tail is a combination of the -F style above and the -S style of the Nighthawk line:


Also, remember that the "cobra hood" design of our tanks is why they get beat to crap in every drop and it's very common to find a 919 with a dented or scratched tank. This was less of a problem for the 80s-F-style tanks.



I'm just not seeing where you get "not aggressive enough" out of it. Even if I did, remember that the "very aggressive standard" slot is now taken up by the -R line, like the CB1000R, CB500R, etc. With correspondingly high insurance pricing; the -R suffix was a mistake.

A bike doesn't have to have a -R suffix in order to look aggressive. The 919 has an amazing look in stock form, it doesn't have a -R, and it doesn't need one.

Right or wrong, IMO, looks matter. You can stand that bike next to a super clean 919 and an 80's -F and I'd take the 919 all day. It's not a judgement of suspension or price, it's a judgement of looks.

This reminds me of the 70's and 80's economy cars. Most economy cars looked like crap, they didn't have to. You can have great styling in any category (muscle, sport, economy...).

Take a MINT 919 and set it next to one of these, side by side... IMO, the 919 is one of the best looking bike around.

As far as the tank goes, yea, I got scars on both sides. I need some sliders / guards, but I wouldn't change out style over that.

It's not that vintage is bad, most of my cars are from the 60's and 70's, retro doesn't mean the lines don't flow.

THAT plays homage to an era in oh so nice a way.
It makes me salivate.
I'd buy that, as long as it doesn't weigh near the zone of 500# or more.
Of course, the proddie' version would have turn signals and stuff hanging off of it, but that's an unshirkable requirement in today's world.

I read that this new concept bike (the CB-F) is based on the cb1000r the neo-sports thing but different styling.

Which is kind of a bummer in my mind because although I like the 1000r looks, when I sit on it, it feels super tiny. I just like having the fat tank of the 919 between my legs.

In terms of looks, I think the only shortcoming of the 919 is the swingarm with those crude welding seams.

That single side swingarm makes such a clean look.

So, maybe it's like a kit bike? The underpinnings are all the same but you can have it dressed as a CB-F or a Neo Sports? That'd be cool - the bean counters would love getting two models at no extra R&D cost...

I had an '81 900F just like that one. I rejetted the carbs. The stock Honda Coils were weak; replaced them with Accel. Kerker pipe, and a K+N filter. Laid a lot of Kawie 1000s to waste with that thing. I put over 50,000 miles on that bike.

I had a poster of Freddie Spencer on a 900F in my garage for years.

If Honda ever musters up the courage to build that bike, I'll quit bashing Honda. And I'll buy one. Kawasaki has been very successful with their Z900. Suzie has the Kan O Tuna. Why not, Honda!

I say they'll do it just like with the cb1000r neo sports. Its just an easy change to the bike for them but it appeals to the kids from the 80's like us.

And hey I had a 82 z1000 and you would have seen my rear tire 😀

Seriously those bikes are what is still engrained in my mind as 'motorcycle'

I know what you mean. I went and got the 80s bike I lusted over as a kid years ago, it's in my signature below. :D


I would be happy if they would make a new version of that in a similar vein. As for this new CB-F, if the hypothetical production version has TCS/ABS, stays relatively the same styling and comes in at $10K or less, I would be a very likely buyer.

I think Cycle World had the 900F listed as doing to quarter mile in 11.96 seconds. That's a slug by today's standards, but it was fast back then. It weighed something like 540 pounds!

Considering that many near-contemporary similar bikes were 2-5 seconds slower in the quarter, yup. This was also pre-modern-sportbike, before fully faired beasts became a common thing.

Wait until you sit on one. I was almost ready to go for the 1000r neo sports then when I put my leg over it I thought no way. These bikes are tiny I'm telling you.

I'm fine with the size of the 1000R, I'd get one except the insurance bill is ridiculous. Honda put the R suffix on it so as a result it gets hit with the literbike-tax-because-people-wrap-R-bikes-around-trees-like-it-is-going-out-of-style insurance rate bat. Multiple times.
