Hey

As spring quickly approachs I'm trying to do all my shopping now instead of when the roads are clear and I can ride.

Having just picked up my niner last fall I'm ill equipped in terms of storage on the bike. Any suggestions on a nice mid size tank bag I can use to go around town with or just for day trips (I.e. Pack lunch and wallet size). Also I've heard that the magnetic tank bags can mess with paint jobs, I've got an 07 niner anyone ever had paint discoloration due to magnets?

I'm on a budget so hard bags won't be an option for a few years...

Thanks!

I can't comment on tank bags but I use an Axio tail bag that I'm pretty happy with. One of the reasons I went with this option was because of concern about paint damage. I also think it doesn't detract from appearance as much as a tank bag. Down sides are no passenger room and no place to put a map where you can see it while riding.

I have a large tank bag. I think it is called the Eifel. 8 magnets and two straps. Never had a problem with them affecting the paint.

I have small Cortech (they have several sizes), magnetic, no marks on the paint yet. Big enough for wallet, phone, water, odds & ends with a small map holder. It comes with a rain cover and a tether too. I think it was around $70.

Get the magnetic bag and forget about it. The straps are un-necessary, I wreaked and mine stayed on. I've used mine for 15 years on about 6 different bikes.

i have about 16k on my 07 99.9% with a tank bag with magnets. factory paint held w/o a problem, even my repaint is not a prob. the trick is to lift each magnet straight up. do not let it slide, you will scratch paint when dust or bugs get stuck under it. and road crap when it rains can scatch if not 100% carefull.

I have a Joe Rocket Manta XL Magnetic Tank Bag. Never had a problem with it scratching my paint. I just make sure the tank and bag are clean before I put them on.

Same as above. Run a tankbag with magnets and no problems. Keep it away from metal shavings and dirt and you're good.

Ive been using RKA's stuff since I got the NightHawk S back in 1984, I'm on my second tank bag from them in that time and it was only changed because they changed their buckle design and I couldn't get another set of straps for the VFR, good stuff, holds up well.
I also have their saddle bags and they work great too.

One thing to be careful of with the magnetic bags is stuff sticking to it. Mine sits on the floor when not on the bike and one day it picked up a staple. Fortunately I found it before putting it on the bike. But if you are worried about getting your paint messed up...the staple would do it :) I do have a couple of very minor scratches, which I am going to attribute to trying to get the bag off my tank (if you aren't careful, it can slide across the paint).

+1 on that. I had my tank bag pick up a paper clip. Did a good number on the paint. :gaah:Use to just pull the bag off without lifting the magnet, I'm sure that didn't help either. Now I lift the magnet flaps, then lift the bag off.
