Oil pan replacement

250 Views 8 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  mynameisthomas
Hey all,

It seems the previous owner of my bike boogered up the drain plug threads, so I'm replacing the pan. Cheaper than putting in a helicoil or similar (found a used pan in great shape for $30 shipped on eBay) and I'd want to remove the pan anyway if I tapped new threads to clean out shavings.

I know to use Hondabond to seal the pan. I'm curious about the replacement procedure. With how little clearance there is, I assume the exhaust has to come off. Can I get away with just removing the front portion (headers to the connection at the Y pipe) or does the whole thing need to come off? The Y pipe is kind of a pain since the shock needs to come out for that too.

Only the main header needs to be removed. You'll want new exhaust gaskets, too. I'd get the radiator off and spray the exhaust flange nuts with some type of penetrant/lube ahead of time. An electric impact wrench is your friend when removing those nuts.

Cheers!

I have new gaskets and also nuts in my shopping cart, as my bike has 40k miles and the nuts are looking a little angry so I'm expecting at least a few casualties. I've got a nice M18 impact to get them out if they put up a fight.

New oil pan is on and sealed. The exhaust nuts were indeed angry, 6 of 8 studs came out with them. The nuts are completely fused to the studs even after an overnight soak, so I'm waiting on new studs now. Don't want to risk running them back in as-is to torque the header down.

On the plus side I'm really happy with how clean the engine is internally for 42k mi.

Also using this as an opportunity to polish the header up a bit. It was super grimy before. Not done yet but getting there.

Yeah, I have oil seeping out from under the pair delete plates I installed a while back. Didn't reinstall the gaskets under them. I'll be doing that while I have everything apart as well.
Oh, is there a trick to getting the old exhaust gaskets out? Because they are seriously stuck in there.
