Does this sound like a healthy 919 idle to you?

I recently got a new to me 2002 honda 919 w/ ~47000 miles on it.

Love it so far, fantastic motorcycle (aside from blown suspension, rear is dead and front right side is weeping oil). I've been writing a maintenance list out for jobs I want to do in the near future, and I was thinking a throttle body sync might be necessary given the mileage of the bike. Come to find out that you can't really do a throttle body sync on a 919, (it's called a "starter valve sync" but might be a different job entirely) according to multiple knowledgeable members of this forum.

My idle sounds pretty similar to multiple other 919s I've found on youtube

But my mechanical anxiety has me trolling youtube for 919 idle sounds, and I came across this video

supposedly post throttle body sync, sounds really smooth compared to mine. What gives? Did the guy do a starter valve sync? Is my idle unhealthy? What do you all make of this?

Yes, your idle has the usual 919 beat to it, and yes, the difference has been brought about by way of the starter valve sync. It's a PITA to do, but yields immediate rewards.

I've been meaning to do this. Have a Carbtune ready to go just haven't bothered to do it yet. I've got the tank raised for a few other jobs right now so I may do it while access is easy.

You'll be happy you did. After you've finished.

@opengl hello again! I also have a carbtune and that sync is on my list! Good luck with yours, do you have a PC3 or running stock? Do you know of a good guide for the 919? I've searched around and haven't found anything with photos / video associated with the procedure.

I don't have a PC3 unfortunately. Is interfacing with the ecu / doing a throttle position sensor sync necessary?

Stock here. I'm going to use a combination of the factory service manual and the post linked above to get it done.

K1w1Boy has given you the succinct answer.
Mine is a bit long winded.

There isn't even a facility to synch your TPI to the ECU.

The TP synching you have read about is synching the TP to a Power Commander, the net effect of which is to align with Power Commanders overlay map upon the ECU's map.
In general terms, the Open Throttle Position is usually very close or spot on, so the "synch" often is a "check" and not a "correction".
Closed Throttle is invariably going to be out some.
My 919 was out 2%, and our son's GSXR600 was out 5%.
5% is major if one is looking for refined throttle control low in the revs and at partial throttle openings as the entire Power Commander corrective overly map is displaced by 5 points of throttle opening.
