919 F3/VFR WHEEL CONVERSION

276 Views 13 Replies 4 Participants Last post by  rufftup
Hello all, recently bought an 07 919 and looking to do the 6 spoke swap. i have a vfr wheel and i just need some clarification on what to do. i have the technical drawings from the 919 WT dropbox folder but am unsure. Do i follow just one of the pages or all of the pages? i don’t want to cut down too many wheel spacers and end up bikeless. i daily my bike so i can’t afford downtime. Any direction on what to do would be hugely appreciated!!

It's pretty straightforward but helpful if you can also acquire the F3 axle and spacers to give you a range to choose from.
i have the vfr wheel axle and spacers and everything. but unsure of which spacers to cut down? do i cut just one down or all of them?

but the axle from the wheel is shorter than the stock 919 axle so i will use my stock 919 axle.

ideally wheel would be perfectly centered. realistically how centered do i need to get it?

To within thousandths of an inch, which is a piece of cake for any machinist.
And it's not just the centreing of the wheel at issue, but that is by far the primary concern.
Secondary is having the rotors equally positioned vis a vis the brake calipers.
so do i cut down just one or all of the spacers. i’m 22 just started working at a machine shop so i’m trying to do this on my own, i don’t have much background so for me it is not a piece of cake.
i just need to know which spacers to cut down.

Do you have drawings and info on all this?
The Dropbox does.
If you can't access the Dropbox, I have the info and can e mail it to you if need be.
yes i have access to drop box info. but from what it seems in the dropbox i’m cutting down all 3 spacers, but i did some math and it did not seem to add up properly so just wanted some direction on what spacers to cut down? and by how much? anyone personally done this mod

Ahhh, now I catch on that you have a VFR front wheel. I'll be honest, I do not know anything about the difference between that wheel and an F3 wheel.

My suggestion is to first determine any difference in width in terms of the left and right outboard face of the inner race of the bearings, then go from there. Also, how do the brake rotor mounting bolt holes align with the VFR wheel?

I don't recollect anyone having used a VFR front wheel on a 919, and my memory is normally pretty good on stuff like that. So if heavy duty searching has not revealed someone having done it, then it sounds as though no one has, so far that is, at least in terms of posting it to WT'ers.

i read on WT that the vfr wheel (i forget what years) but the later years for the 750 is the same as the f3 wheel
here is the wheel i purchased
does anyone know where i could find all the exact oem measurements of an f3 wheel to compare to the vfr wheel?

don’t mind my dangling calipers lol they were only like that for a minute to take the picture

my bike is an 07 with 44k miles, i just race teched the front suspension, i wanna do the front wheel since i bent my 3 spoke, then rear shock, then 900rr rear wheel

Have you scouted the Vfr forums?
according to the VFR forums the f3 wheel is the same as the VFR wheel that i have. with that being said, can anyone tell me which spacers to modify? how many spacers total will i need to modify?
I think you need to begin with some measurements of your own - try another test fitting of the wheel and look at how it matches up with the caliper mounts, centres on the fork etc and go from there. The orig 919 wheel and spacers will tell you what overall width you should be aiming for...my admittedly hazy recollection is that I didn't need to do anything at all to the flange-style spacer on the throttle side, but mine was an F3/F4 type wheel, so your results might be different.
