|wmsnider||I just bought an '03 919 last August. These bikes are pretty much the same through the years, but besides the upgraded front suspension in '04, one thing I noticed is '04s and newer have a built in digital clock with a 2nd trip meter. I wish my '03 had that. I thought about swapping out the gauge cluster if anybody had one for sale?!|

thanks so much guys for all your help. i saw rats bike for sale(still an option) i'm going to look at a '04 silver with 7800 miles tomorrow.
i sold the magna 2day, and already have a bite on the 85 ceptor.
i'm so close to being a proud 919 owner i can taste it

There are brand new ones on Sleazebay from dealers for 6500 range. I have seen lower also!
Just look around, and if I could get a brand new one for that kinda dough, I would spring the extra dough.......JMO....

Ratdog has an excellent example for sale (a very nice color) just make sure you get all the aftermarket parts you can afford.

04-07 has the upgraded suspension front and rear that is adjustable.
engines are bullet proof. I bought mine with 14k miles and it is nearly at 30k now and still no valve adjustment. I need to get in and look into it very soon however.

I paid $5,700 for my '07 with just over 2,500 miles on it.
The first valve service is called for at 600 miles (along with the 1st oil & filter change), then 16,000 mile intervals after that. I have heard that the valves are typically still within spec at 16K and often 32K miles.
The last bike I had with bucket/shim valve adjustments was an '81 CB750-F, and things have improved quite a bit since!

scrat was right on. The bikes fundamentally have not changed between 2002 and 2007 with the exception of the upgraded suspension for 2004 and newer.
I payed $4099 out the door (tax, title, license) for my '03 Asphalt 919 with a small ding on the left side of the tank, slight scuff on the alt. cover, and 15,xxx miles. Picked it up near the end of the riding season last year.
Like stated before...just look for wear on the chain, sprockets, pads, or signs of general neglect or care.
If the tires are worn badly, I'd try to get a couple hundred off for a new set. (depending on how badly worn)

There doesn't seem to be any reliablility issues with these bikes. if i remember right, there is a guy i LA with over 80k on his, and i don't think he's had the motor opened. More important is the care that has been taken in maintaining it. look for the obvious tell tale signs, such as brake pads, chain and sprockets, and cleanliness of the whole unit, not just the shiny parts!
Valves are called for at 16k. many of us, upon hitting that mark, simply checked them, found them within specs, and put it back together These things are bulletproof!
The 919 was relatively unchanged through it's lifespan, the most noticeable change i can think of besides color being the addition of adjustable compression dampening in the forks for 2004 (it may have been 03, i can't remember off hand).

questions from a newbie
new here and have been lurking and reading all i can at this great place.
i'm selling 2 honda v4's so i can buy a 919 .
-i've seen quite a few 919's for sale all over with widely ranging milage, so how many miles on a 919 should be the cutoff or dealbraker?
-what is the first scheduled valve adjustment? is it 16000 mi.?or is the first earlier?
-is there a year you would shy away from? i have'nt seen anything on here so i'm just asking the 'spurts.
