WTF did you guys get me into?

I finally threw a leg over the KLR today. Doing the break-in. Will try to get the 25 mile, give or take, and the 100 miles oil and filter changes done today. First 15 miles are done. Letting the engine cool a bit, then another 15 miles and an oil change. Repeat several times tonight.

Just finished the first ride ever on this bike. It's been awhile since I've been on a "thumper". OMG ... that power rush just takes my breath away, NOT!

I like the riding position, but the offset footpegs will help. I'd like the hands a bit farther back and up. New bars will solve that. The front brake definitely needs to be upgraded with new SS lines. The fork brace will help.

I've got alot of work ahead of me. Thanks to Ridge and Jet, they done most of the R&D on components.

Hmmm ... I can't wait to put 6k miles on this thing in a few weeks. WTF am I think?

I'm going to have to scramble and see if I can at least get the 685 kit in and maybe some head work. I do like the sit up position missed it. Also, miss being able to almost stand up straight. The new bars and pegs will help that. The stock seat is super Charmin comfy soft ...

It's been that way. Came that way from the dealer. 1st ride just happened, 2nd ride is in about 2 minutes with an oil and filter change.

Don't forget an engine guard. That Tupperware piece won't protect you from a squirrel, much less a rock.

Dude, give it a chance, its a brand new motor - give it 1k miles before you go and big bore it ! It may seem a bit anemic on the road , but , once you get in the off road/gravel, its a handful ! Trust me !

And , while Im on the subject - are you changing the blasted oil so often ? This motor is like a piece of lawn equipment - run it ! It need to get its oil dirty to let if set things up and break in - Yeah , Id change it before the 600 miler, but, every 50/100 miles is just wasting your cash -

Oil and filters are cheap. Bought 2 gallons today for $23 including tax and 3 filters for $14 bucks. I just want to get all the filings, chips, flakes, etc, out of the engine. There's a whopping 30 miles on it now. The thing only takes like 2.5l of oil. I piss more than that!

I usually getting everything together and mod it all at one shot. Sort of always been that way.

My first mod went on just now. What a bietch to get on ... took all my mechanical and engineering skills. I sweat like a mother putting it on! This will be the last pic until complete with all changes.

Time to go change oil ... bikes cooled down a bit.

Oil filter did it's job. Nothing out of the usual, normal flecks of metal. Had a decent amount of grit in the oil filter well. Took close to 3l with filter change.

Okay, it's growing on me. Hit the highway for a short bit. It's comfy between 75-80mph. It's tolerable at 85mph, but above that and in the 90ish range it gets a bit squirrely and light. It does do 100, even with my fat a$$ on it.

The fork brace and suspension mods should help that out. The VarioTouring Screen with spoiler should help with divert the air properly. The spoiler is a bit goofy looking, but should work.

My girls saw me ride by on it and the comment from my oldest is, "you look like a sumo on that thing, its too tiny for you." That makes me feel oh so good!

She is very smart! After a long day you will need that narrow seat surgically removed.

I disagree. Take a look at the fender on the DR-650 for the "platypus" look. The KLR's looks sleek and fast compared to it.

I was just checking up on all my parts ... the ones that Ridge and Jet have already performed and did all the leg work on. Thanks guys.

I like doing everything in one shot. The only thing that I'm missing right now is my center stand. Should be in next week and available the following week.

The bike will definitely look familiar and individually different when complete ... hopefully, I get it all done the way I have planned. Due to the somewhat small stature of the bike on the road and lack of "get out of the way power", the back will be brighter than a fully decked Gold Wing when done. What 'til you see what I have planned and have ready to install when I get back next week.

It was nice and warm out!

My riding shikona "Yokozuna Hung Lo". Being the sekitori that I am, I wore my silk mawashi ... that's just how I roll! I still get the funny stares in parking lots when I do my ritual yokozuna dohyō-iri. You know my camel pack will be filled with chikara-mizu for the trip.

When I modify the shrouds, the Kawasaki decal will be replaced with RIKISHI in the form of sumo-ji.

But, I am light on my toes!

Okay, I'm thinking of shipping out tires or finding tires out in CO when I get there. The MEFO I want will not be in until late next week, therefore, no MEFOs.

The thought here is ... wear down the stock tires on the superslab, they really aren't that bad on the road. Also, I've been told that they are only good for about 2-3k miles. Once out west, spoon on a pair of more aggressive Dunlops or other for the remainder of the trip?

If you really want to go that route, order a set from my dealer and we will carry them in the truck on our way out.

Ridge, if you guys have them in stock ... definitely. Fred over at Arrowhead, a bit of a dikc IMO (especially after what I've spent with him), is the closest to getting them in within the next 2-weeks. But, no guarantees.

So, are you both using Dunlops? What other makes or styles would you carry at the dealer?

Well technically, you can order whatever you want from wherever has the best price. Just have them shipped to me and I'll throw them in the truck.

My top choices for this trip:

Dunlop D606
Kenda K270
Maxxis M6006
IRC GP1

Thats some funny stuff, man I wish I had photoshop and knew how to use it, I'd put a KLR under that Sumo leg. Bah, where's my teenager when I need him.
