New Bike In the Family - DR-Z400SM

So my little brother stops over tonight. He hasn't ridden in a couple years. He had a CBR and a soft tail in the stable for years. A deer strike on the HD and a Medivac ride made him take a step back, and his need for 85 MPH wheelies with a young son at home made him decide to sell everything. So after a few years the itch is back and he scratched it today with a brand new DRZ 400 SM. Gorgeous bike. Can't wait to ride her! I'm glad he's back!

been looking at them used, just cannot justify the money or need for a third bike.

He's already scouting out pricing for another set of tires and rims for the dirt, Yoshi exhaust, and some new gear. He was laughing about a 400c with one cylinder, little thumper that it is. It sure doesn't have the oomph he's used to with the CBR, or even the HD for that matter, but he felt the need to get something more tame so he wasn't doing high speed wheelies and stoppy's. Plus he loves the dirt. Seems like a good compromise. And dirt cheap insurance and great MPG for commuting too.

Ken,
It has been some time since anything has been posted about your brothers ride. How is he liking it? Did he source any dirt wheels? Ride in any dirt? I am interested in picking up something a little more versitile as a second bike. Something to handle mostly street duty (commuting, around town) and trail riding when I get the bug.

I talked with a guy who had one of those this weekend at a gas stop. Nice looking ride.

He's now fully equipped with dirt and street tires and lovin' this bike. Took a little getting used -- going from a litre RR to a thumper was a drastic change

Not meaning to be any trouble to you, what dirt wheels worked? DRZ400S? Something aftermarket? Just trying to get some idea of the investment required. Has he looked into any power enhancements?

No troubles at all -- here's his response:

"The wheels were from an “S” and I put on Dunlop d606’s – they work great – stock chain too.

I looked into buying new wheels but $$$$$ - I’ve heard that drz dirt wheel sets are even more now since people want both – I paid $900 including shipping for a set that came with SM rotors, good sprocket but bad trailwing tires.

Besides the wheel set, have done full Yosh rs-2 system, 3x3 airbox mod, jet kit, k&n air filter. Want to do the FCR carb upgrade but the carb and kit is like $535 !!

Bike goes pretty good – hard to have fun on anything after the CBR though, it’s like a heroin addict smoking pot – whoopee – just kidding – it’s good !

It’s really nice having a true dual sport though – and it looks really cool !!"

I'd take one of those in a heartbeat!

In my opinion, the M1 rifle is the greatest battle implement ever devised.

Ken,
You were not kidding about dirt cheap insurance. Less than a huney per year!

Well, this is an interesting turn of events. Follow up email from my brother. And we haven't even had a chance to ride together...

Ask the board if there is any interest in a nicely modded black 2007DRZSM with spare wheel set and only 373.5 miles.

I just don’t have time to ride it – not sure what I want for it – haven’t thought about selling but….

Have over $8000 into it with mods and wheels, etc..

Bike “out the door” $6390 on 4/25/2007 from Hollink Motorsports
Wheels $ 900
Other >$1100 tires, chain, exhaust, handguards, case savers, frame protectors, edge tail light

Make offer ??
