KLR650 Doohickey

Since we have a few KLR and soon to be KLR owners I thought this thread would be of interest.

Came across a article in the Dec. 2007 issue of Motorcyclist magazine. Page 119 MC Garage, ask the pro.

It has to do with the so called Doohickey aka: idler shaft lever aka: the bit that snugs up the counterbalancer drive chain.

This item appears to have a high failure rate. Google Doohickey and see for yourself. Here are a couple of links.

According to the Kawi techs. the failures can be eliminated if you perform periodic adjustments to the tensioning mechanism. KlR's prior to 2008 should be done every 3k miles and the 2008 bikes every 7500 miles.

The article goes on to recommend a stout aftermarket replacement Doohickey from Eagle Manufacturing or Sagebrush Machine for pre 08' models.

I believe a replacement is already waiting for me. Ridge's is either already done or will be very soon.
