KLR 15T to 16T conversion

I'd like to put another combo ride together based on the last 70 mile ride I had with the new sprocket. An easy conclusion to present to anyone interested would be:

For the type of riding I have done over the 12,000 miles I have on my 2005 KLR650, I wished I made the conversion during break in.

I've read similar recently. One person went so far as to say they don't even miss not having a 6th gear anymore.

That in exact words is the feeling that I got out on the highway.

Let me expand on this idea:

RPM------------SPEED15T------------SPEED16T
3000------------46MPH---------------48MPH
4000------------61MPH---------------63MPH
5000------------75MPH---------------80MPH
5500------------82MPH---------------82MPH
6000------------89MPH---------------95MPH
6500------------97MPH---------------104MPH

These figures are Speedo and are not corrected. Correction factors follow:

46 Speedo= 41 Radar= 12.2% high

61 Speedo= 54 Radar= 12.9% high

75 Speedo=67 Radar= 11.9% high

97 Speedo=88 Radar= 10.2% high

Of course there are going to be measurement errors. I got just a bit of time before I have to shut things down to take a corner then pull over.

Now mixed riding:

One lane mountain asphalt, uphill all the way.....I was sued to short-shifting my KLR on this road. I found that I could hang in 1st longer, but I didn't want to short shift to second. Second as a utility gear on this road felt easier on me and the bike with the taller gearing. Upper gears (beyond third) are not considered here. Tourque level and pulling power, seat of the pants is minimually affected in first.

One lane fireroad, downhill all the way..........I was more comfortable with the taller gearing here. Again, third is the highest I used. I found the extra tall first was more fun combining a higher speed and greater range busting loose around corners. Short shifting is still welcome under these conditions. My test is gonna have to expand here with a trip UP the fireroad and a nice 15 mile ridgeline run in (10mi dirt, 5 mile tiny skinny fast whoopy asphalt) There is where I can get a flavor for first through fourth.

Highway................Wow! Tits man, just tits (massive pecs and sixpack abs for the ladies) Let me first say that in the state of tune of my KLR (she really needs an oilchange, new plug and a cleaned K&N) she will not pull beyond 6500 RPM with my 230 lbs sitting up. If I get under the paint, I can pull 6700. I need to perform some maintenance before I can get max speed data.
Now this bike feels like it has a sixer in the tranny! Very comfortable. Fourth is a dream, street short shifting is satisfying, and looking down at the speedo and seeing 105 plus is very nice. The comfort gotten from lower RPM's at fast highway pace is excellent. IMHOP, my bike will never see another 15tooth.
I think that in order to take full advantage of the advanced top end, one should purchase an exhaust system, filter and jet kit and tune this monkey to squeeze every ounce out of her. Questions? Don't hesitate!

Awesome, thanks for the firsthand review Dave. Sounds like I need to go ahead and get an order in for mine.

Thanks, James. I was getting the uneasy feeling of "Sloppy butt, no reach around" kind cause only Jet replied. I feel better now. I'm gonna take the dirty girl out right now. I just changed her oil and filter and she gave me one of those sexy 'peek-a-boo' shots and now I gotta ride her.

Sorry Bigdaa, I must have missed this one way back when. Time for a 16T. Thanks for all the good info.

I feel like a leach. I'm doing none of the research and just taking from everyone here on the KLR mods.

It's better to have loved and lost than live with the psycho for life!
