DRz400e
Broke this bad boy in today. 50km of Bush tracks and beach. I used this method.

Hard acceleration and deceleration, all gears. Changed out oil when I got home. Oil had a definite metallic glint to it so I'm glad I did. I'll do it again real soon. Suzuki recommend first change at 1000km. Also to take it very easy, only 1/2 throttle for the first 1000km km then 3/4 throttle for till 1600km. I probably take it fairly easy for a bit know.
Bike is fantastic in the bush. Loads of power. Dealer removed restrictions.
Its actually my farm bike, I use it for work. At least I'll tell the taxman that.

Just as well they've got that transportation place for hives, eh? Tell the taxman that's why they, uh, make an excellent work vehicle.

Yeah I heard they were bullet proof. One of the reasons for getting this model. We'll see. At the beach today there was a 30ft rooster tail out the back and a stupid grin at the front.

I'll keep it rugged lookin. It's my off road bike. My beloved 919 is my dedicated street bike.
I have changed a few things already. Aftermarket black plastics, except headlight which I may or may not change. There is a tail tidy on its way since the stock one is huge. I've been told the stock tail is useful for creek crossings. If stuck you can take it off, turn it upside down and use it for a canoe and paddle out! Some aftermarket turn signals, rack, stuff like that. The suspension feels great as is. Stock exhaust is fine. I won't be spending too much on it since I'll be off road a lot. I've almost dropped it twice already.
It's a tall narrow bike, I feel like a Yeti riding a banana.

Fitted a B&B rack with some Rok tie down straps. Then went exploring.

I did a little modifying this morning.
Fitted some cheap aftermarket mirrors. They look nicer than stock, weight less, work well and will be cheap to replace when I break em.
Fitted a fender eliminator led tail light kit. The stock one was hideous and HUGE! I was concerned about mud up my back but after a ride in the rain this morning down a gravel road my back was clean. I did get gravel mud flying all over my front. Run off from the front fender. Oh well.
Pulled the tail light apart, sprayed circuit varnish on the led board and sealed it all up with silicon.

You'll miss your niner. The Aussie drz400e makes around 40hp, the 919 110hp. But the drz400 can go anywhere and is much cheaper to run and maintain. I'm lucky I got to keep both.
I seriously considered getting the drz400 supermoto. Upside down forks, cool looks but I already had a road bike so I went with the off-road version, the drz400e. I'm pretty sure the supermoto version is still a capable off road bike.
The other reason for getting the e version was performance. The Australian drz400e is actually the "race" version made road legal with lights and stuff. The engine is still the race type. Australian emissions law is quite relaxed. I'm pretty sure the overseas drz400sm has a special carburetor and other emission controls. All reduces power output. But nothing that can't be removed or changed.
Second hand drz400 are cheap as chips. I would highly recommend taking one for a ride first. Single cylinder thumpers have a completely different feel to a inline 4 cylinder rice rocket.
I'm loving being able to blast around the bush and beach over the winter. I don't ride my 919 much over winter so it's been good keeping in form on my drz400. Like I said cheap to run, maintain and goes anywhere.
Suzuki have been making these bikes with very little change for over ten years. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Very reliable and bullet proof. Loads of aftermarket stuff and cheap parts from wrecked bikes too.

Cold windy weekend bike jobs. Replaced the stock headlight with an aftermarket one. The stock one weighed 1.5kg and was bright yellow. I'm a little worried about not being as visible head on along bush tracks with all the yellow gone so I'm going to find a stupidly bright led bulb for the headlight. Also swapped out the stock mirrors for some cheap better looking mirrors. The stock ones where giant heavy square units. Also expensive to replace if busted. Indicators next.
All the weight savings up front got added to the rear! I made a carry box for the rack out of ply. It's bolted to the rack has a tool tube for extra fuel and my tool kit bolted to the front.

Awesome! I just picked up a 2005 DRZ400sm. Well, I traded a 2006 Honda 919 for a 2002 Kawasaki Vulcan 1500 Classic FI, then traded the Vulcan for the DRZ. It's a hoot! Already has the E model carb, 3x3 mod, full yoshi exhaust, clark 4gal tank, raptor petcock, fender eliminator, and other mods I'm sure it has but I'm forgetting. However, the PO stripped out the oil drain plug then cobbled it back in with JB weld so it now leaks oil worse than my Harley, which is saying something.

i'm really curious to how the zero electric FX/FXS would stack up against this, on and off road...
How heavy is the drz ? the zero is 112/131kg (depending on if you get bigger battery or not)
I'm not going to lie my main attraction to electric moto is the ability to "fuel"by just plugging it into a socket at home; like a phone :P

The Drz400e weight is around 138kg.
Electric motorbikes are cool but I don't think they have quite nailed it yet.

I will never rubbish the 919 seat again. Spent the best part of the day in the DRZ400 saddle today and my butt is busted. Like riding a plank. Rode mostly standing for the last hour.

I did a little sprocket cover mod. Picked up a secondhand cover from a wreckers. I cut out some slots in the center and now can wash out mud from underneath.
The cover was from a drz400sm and came with a case saver. The drz400sm comes stock with a 15t front sprocket but the drz400e comes stock with a 14t front sprocket. The drz400e case saver will not fit over a 15t sprocket. I'm using the case saver from the drz400sm on my drz400e and have gone up a tooth on the front sprocket. I didn't have to cut and extend the endless chain, it all fitted well. Bike is now much better on the road, cruising speed. Before the bike was revving hard in top gear at highway speeds. Highway speeds with full knobby tires isn't much fun either so I'll do something about those too.

It's my off-road bike but to get off-road I'm on sealed blue metal and gravel roads for sometimes up to an hour. Even though I'm taking it easy the full knobby tires are just hairy. The vibrations sux and cornering is just plain scary. Also the knobbies wear fast on sealed roads. They are great fun off-road though. Lots!
Now most of my off-road riding is in quite sandy, dry country. Not much mud. Less aggressive tread can be good in sand as full knobbies can just dig down.
As to which type and brand of tire I'll get once these aggressive knobbies wear out I wouldn't have a clue just yet. More the adventure type, maybe 70/30.

Fitted a new fuel mixture screw. The stock one was impossible to adjust with bike complete, ie with carbie on bike. The starter motor is in the way. It's called a flex jet, and it allows you to adjust the idle fuel mix while bike is running. I had a slight hanging idle. Got a jet/needle kit coming.

This morning I rode down an old fire trail through the mountains. Never made it to the lookout cause of several trees fallen over track. Didn't even make it out the other side. I rode around some downed trees. A couple I rode over. One I got under. But then it got worse down in a wet gully. I'm going back on the weekend with a small chainsaw on the back. No one's been all the way in years.

Drier than average winter here. Met Bur outlook over summer is for hot dry conditions too. Good weather for bees, not so good for Bushfires.
Yeah no mud to play in, didn't have to wash the bike but.

I found a nice launch on my way to check some bee hives today. I was working mind you. Just got a little distracted, a few times.

Bee related question, do you use any tech to monitor your bee hives ? temp sensors, humidity etc? Weight sensor to see how much honey a hive has or doesn't ?

No monitoring tech. I have considered remote camera tech. Other than the vehicles I'm pretty much doing it the same way it was done 200yrs ago. You get a good "feel" for it after a while. To really "feel" what's going on the best way is quietly open up the hive and have a look. Besides if the hives were remotely monitored I wouldn't have an excuse to flog about the bush on my DRZ!

Took a detour on my way back from town this morning. 2 hours of fire trails through a mountain range, lunch at a lookout. Never saw a soul.
