BMW F650 GS ??

Anybody have experience with these? Gin really liked the feel and look of the one she sat on at the track yesterday, but I really don't know much about them. The new one is a twin, the older ones are singles, guess they don't have a lot of power but get great mileage and are very reliable.

Found this one not too far away....http://lexington.craigslist.org/mcy/838967795.html

Not like she needs another bike, but an adventure bike might fit her personality better than her Vulcan or Hornet, she's a nature girl after all. Of course then I'd have to get an adventure bike...

I do believe one of the most metrosexual members here has a F650GS? He should be able to fill up in quite nicely.

It's better to have loved and lost than live with the psycho for life!

I got my 06 with corbin and side bmw bags 4k miles for 6900 out the door for some reference.

I'd make her sell it with all that stuff included, kbb has them listed

My wife is 5'3'' and with the stock low seat and the shock lowered as far low as possible she can touch both feet comfortably. Haven't taught her to ride yet cause i have to many kids and not baby sitters!! haha!

Only problem i've had is a major leak the entire side cover on the engine got lose and the dealer found trouble and tightened it up under warranty. One big pain in the azz to change oil, 14 screws have to come out and the plastic has to come off, course that gives you access to the battery that has to be serviced alot to keep water in it or buy an Oddessy sealed type.

I've gotten use to all that though not too bad really, come on down and i'll let you ride and check it out!! might be easier to check that one out though

The DR-650 is a bulletproof workhorse ADV bike that can easily be lowered without altering the geometry. Suzuki designed it to be easily changed.

While I loved the Dakar editions of the F650, I thought the standards were kind of blah.

Now that 800GS....

Thanks for all the info AJ, sounds like this one in Kentucky isn't any super deal to run off and buy tomorrow. We'll go to the local dealer first and try to get a test ride on a new one maybe, they might even have an older used one.

Don't think the DR-650 is going to to it for her, something about that rugged BMW look with the hard side boxes is quite tempting. I checked out the 800GS and 1200GS at the BMW tent, the 1200 is an awesome machine but too heavy I think, the 800 might be just about right.

They make a lowered seat, lowered suspension model of the F650. I see them every once in awhile on Craigslist.
The standard bike might be a stretch for Ginger.

We have the Dakar version and I can reach the ground on tiptoes.

Right, that's what she sat on at the race, lowered suspension and seat model, almost let her flat foot in sandals. That one in Lexington is the only one within 500 miles on Craigslist right now.

Bump....

We were bored yesterday, headed over to the BMW dealer to torture ourselves. Ginger is in love with the new 2009 F650GS low, it fits her perfectly right out of the box. I checked out both the F800GS and the F1200GS, have to say the 800 fits me fine and feels great, love the looks of the 1200 but it seems like a handful.

She thinks she's an adventure bike type of girl, already having fantasies about taking off and riding to South America. Of course that new F650GS is 10 grand, before you add all the cool aluminum luggage and brush guards, and she is unemployed and already has two bikes of her own in the garage.

I can see it though, take about a year off work, couple of new BMW dual sport bikes, heading off on the adventure of a lifetime!

Do a little research on the offroading capabilities of the 650. I read in Motorcyclist that it is a little more street orientated than the 800-1200 bikes. They said it was great on fire roads etc, but when the going got tough so did the ride quality. Would be an excellent and efficient commuter.

That BMW in the picture looks more like an urban version of the 650. No spoked wheels, no engine guards, smaller fuel tank, no hand guards.

Right, that's what she was sitting on yesterday, it can be outfitted differently I'm sure, more like this F800GS

Well Ginger is yearning for an adventure bike again, our bar manager Dustin just got a new R1200GS and it's got her all stoked up.

Lots of F650 GS bikes for sale, sounds like I could pick up a decent one for around five grand. I think she'd give up her little Vulcan to get a BMW dual sport, can probably still get $3500 out of it so not too expensive of an upgrade.

I responded to three ads, we'll see if any of the bikes are still available. She's in Florida this week, would be a fun surprise when she got home huh?

Nice! Why are you selling it? Ok, never mind, just read back through your ad.

Here's what I've found so far a bit closer to home...

Detroit bike is still available, owner just called me back. That's perhaps the most tempting one, a black '06 with 9K miles, ABS and heated grips, $5500. Has the low seat but would still need to add lowering links to make it fit her.

Wish it wasn't 5 hours away...

The more research I do the better that Detroit G650FS looks. Danger, danger!

Talked to the seller, said he's bought it new, has never been laid down. I drove way the hell up in Michigan to buy the FJR, why can't these good deals be closer to home?

That will be a very generous gift and cheaper than a ring.
My SO saw a sweet beemer at the office she granted pre-approval. Maybe I should go see it... The beemer dealer offers "free" test rides, *IF* you have bike insurance! Has Gin ridden it to validate she likes it, before driving to motortown?

She has not ridden one yet, that's the only concern with driving 5 hours to buy it. I'm sure from all I've read that she would love it, but could always resell it if not. My calling in life seems to be buying and selling cars, trucks and motorcycles, luckily I'm pretty good at it, never lose money and usually make a little in the process.

And she's much more into an adventure bike than a ring, she's cool that way

Maybe if AJ wants to bring it up here and drop the price to beat that one in Detroit we could strike a deal.

We pretty much live for today, you never know what tomorrow will bring. That fact is driven home every time I read the news of a tragic event, gotta enjoy life while we can. If that means continuing to buy motorcycles of all different types because it makes us happy, well I figure there are worse ways to spend our money huh?

Lucky man there, 'beau. The only wheels my wife will ever see will be the ones on her car or two big ones at her hips and two smaller ones out in front, which seems to be the way things are going right now.

And the more you talk about that bergmann, the more I want to kick over my niner. FEH ! I want POWER ! I want REFINEMENT ! I wanna be a motorcycle snob toooooooo..... (face in hands sobbing)

Looks like nice low mile '08's can be had for around $4000, I may still end up with one if I find a bargain, going to check out a couple of other options first though.

Ok, I think we're going to Ohio this weekend to check out this older F650GS...

Was looking at later models with dual plugs and ABS, but they're running closer to $6000 for one with decent mileage. Owner says this one's in perfect shape, I see it as a low cost way to get her on an adventure bike without breaking the bank.

We're headed to Ohio tomorrow, appointment to see the bike I posted above at 2:30pm. One owner bike, comes with BMW hard boxes, never been down and in great condition. I've already got a buyer lined up for Gin's '02 Vulcan 500 at $3500, which just happens to be asking price for the F650GS, pretty fair trade if you ask me!
