Back in the game

Hi Guys!

It's been ages since I've been on the forum because I have been bikeless for quite some time now.

I just picked up a 93 XR600R and have plans to convert it to a street ridden motard over time.

Missed you all!

JW

Good to have you back in the fold.

That sounds like an excellent project if you ask me. What a blast and I think the rewards will be plenty. The pictures are what's important here. Step by step documentation is needed if we are all to live vicariously through you. And you know we will share the pain if any with you.

Found it right after posting, good looking 600, I thought about swapping all the plastic on my XR650L over to the white.

So here's my thought on the bike....and these are just ramblings because I still have that "new bike buzz" going on. I'm thinking since this is an older bike what I should probably do is keep my budget small - at least initially. Thinking I could get a set of excel rims. Probably and 3.5" and a 4.25" and lace them up with my stock hubs. Then I could throw a set of SM tires on it to get a feel for this thing.

The only thing that concerns me is if I don't like it. Then I will have to tear my wheels apart to go back to my off-road set up. I'm just a little gun shy about sinking $800 into wheels for a $1300 dollar bike. Don't get me wrong...I realize I will never get my money back out of this but I would like to me a little conservative at first.

Opinions? Suggestions?

wheels are a lot of $$ but you can always sell them later. Lace/unlace is a lot of work and there aren't a lot of ppl looking for unlaced wheels should you want to sell them later.
IMO, get new wheels and keep yours for offroad.

Motostrano has some that would work for the XR. Come with the sprocket and oversized rotors. I think it would run me about $900 if I did it that way.

OUCH!

Anyone know of any other good sources for wheels?

I actually do know someone with a machine shop. What would be required for fitment? I am clueless when it comes to stuff like that.

register on site site and search around: www.supermotojunkie.com
you will have to get custom caliper bracket for the front.
Price it, you will need new sprocket, rotors, caliper bracket and wheels plus some custom work. Can potentially save some money or not ...
cush drive obviously would be a nice bonus with cbr setup

I registered there last night. Posted up a "new guy" thread and not one person responded. They don't seem like a real friendly bunch so far.

Thanks! I'll check it out. I think I poked around that site a bit back when I had my 400ex.

$900 for front/back, hubs, hoops and spokes! That's cheap, only cheaper way I know of is to lace up stock hubs, even then $170 ea. for the hoops $75 ea. set of spokes

I got lucky and found a flat track wannabe that had a full set of 17s front and back with caliper extension and over size rotor, he traded me the whole pile for my stock 18 rear(only!) it was crazy!!!

Check out Buchanan for spokes

Don't get me wrong. I'm not saying that's a bad price. You have to remember my entire bike was only $1300.

Damn!! This state really bites sometimes>:-{ the XR650R liquid cooled was what I originally wanted but turns out Oregon says NO street machine, could have saved about $4000

Guess I could have followed my pal, he supermoto'ed a '96 CR500, signals, headlight, magwheels and the whole lot....then the weasel turned around and got it lisenced...How? Used and older frame think it was an '82

A little late on this response but if you are considering white plastics think it through. It stains so easily that you have to really be a neat freak about getting dirt and mud off as quickly as possible. Especially this red clay like we have around here.

I ur not to worried about the plastic being super shiny, some dawn and a (real)scotch brite pad will keep white plastic gleaming white, with minimal effort, I have two white quads that will burn ter retnas on sunny days
