Question Oldie...but still goodie?

I recently pulled my 1986 700 nighthawk's' out of storage after 10 years.
It ran o.k. when stored, except for a few problems. 2nd gear is non-op, and some light oil leakage around valve covers. All the fluids were drained @ storage time.
I loved the bike, but when I decided to start riding again, it was too much to tackle in a short time, so I found a '84 FJ1100 in great condition.
Now I have the time and the motivation (15 yrold son wants to ride,And also the wife). I'm thinking it would be a great 1st street bike (son has plenty of off-road riding under his belt).
I am a machinist by trade so I have limited knowledge about motors & such, but am fairly mechanicly inclined.
I'm thinking that this would be a great project for jr and me, but don't know if it is worth the hassles.
Any input or advice would be appreciated.
Is it worth the time & $'s ?
