New Horse in the Stable

Dad and I have been looking and searching for a project bike for about 6 months now. We just found our project! Its a 1985 Honda Goldwing Aspencade.

The guy was asking $900 for it and gave it to us for $700. It has 77,000 miles on it and it runs! Not well... But it starts right up and idles smooth. When you give it gas it chokes and dies though... It definitely needs a good carb cleaning (That will be an adventure!!! Cant wait!!!) There is a problem with the clutch, when its off you can shift it all the way through the gears but there is no tension on the clutch lever.
Other than that the electric accessories (radio etc) dont work, but i think its just a fuse. Everything else is cosmetic, and it is UGLY. Going to need to repaint and replace lots of plastic and clips and fix lots of plastic.

I am going to have to jump through some hoops to get a title but it is do able. The original owner was in the Airforce so its a Alaska Title, the guy I bought it from has a copy of the title but is in touch with the person who supposedly has the original. Going to be a pain in the butt but for $700 you cant go wrong!

Definitely looking forward to this challenge! I will have pictures up soon I am bringing it home Wednesday night I think and then I will post them!

This is going to be a blast!!!

You need to check the brakes before you do anything - Hondas from that era had a trend to pit caliper pistons - causing no brakes or all brake all the time - Seems to me like they were pretty good bikes, carbs were a PITB to sync if I rember correctly and heaven be with you should you need to put a stator in it ! Major PITB !!

My brother has an 84 Aspencade that he's been bringing up to spec (used it for our Spring Break adventure). Let me know if you have any questions, I think he's had it pretty far apart...has done the forks, brakes, installed a new final drive (I was there for that one), and a few other odds and ends. Once you take all the fairings off, it does look like a bike dying to be naked with that big ol 1200. Best of luck!

Well she is home! Lots of rust and cracked plastic and messed up paint.
All of the electric works except for the extra stuff Radio, CB etc. The Carbs definitely need to be cleaned, there is a problem with the clutch. Brakes need to be fixed and lots of restoration work. Not sure yet whether we will be getting it running then selling or doing a full restore or somewhere in between. Dad and I need to talk about it more. I am leaning towards full restore and keep he kind of wants to fix and flip it.

Couldnt let the other bikes feel left out!!! Yes they have feelings!

Also in my garage and for sale!!! Make an offer!!!

Wow. That's...quite the project there. Big pluses - lots of parts available if you have a motorcycle yard around and once the panniers are off, a bit easier to work on. That's quite the ambitious project!

wow.... you really need to practice driving that thing with the sidecar on it before you take it into traffic... those things will f'ing kill you.... as in dead... because they handle funky with a sidecar on it.. no leaning... steering like a car... a car that tips over one way and slides tires going the other way... ... be careful...

Yeah I am actually thinking about fixing the sidecar then just selling it. I dont really want it at all... I want a bike not a car. But apparently its worth ALOT.

Well all of the fairings are off, the front one was ridiculously hard to remove. I went to bleed the hydraulic clutch and i broke off clutch slave cylinder... the bleed valve wouldn't come out and I just put to much pressure on it and snapped it right off with the socket wrench... So I am looking for a new one. Lame...

With all of the fairings off it looks like it would be so much fun to streetfighter... But dad still says no. Lame

so...bP... i come from the land of vintage hondas... (not to be confused with the land down under. however, i wouldn't mind being from there, as long as the greater land down under included the land of vintage hondas)
Let me know if you have any dumb questions, i've gone through at least a half dozen wings now and have a couple.... wanna do a single or double weber downdraft conversion? single barrel common heated manifold? $500 fuel injection? let me know. i might have some odds and ends parts for you too as far as bodywork goes. i could start my own classic wing emporium.

30,000 mile 919 survivor. No plans of stopping the abuse any time soon.
