Kawasaki F4 Sidewinder

First off I must give props and thanks to Dadogs (although I may curse him later for setting me on this road ) for eagerly handing over what will become my project bike.

I'll begin, it's an uncommon bike. The frame is date stamped with a build date of 9/69 making it a 1970 model. It's a 250cc rotary valve two stroke. He are the "just off the trailer" pictures as it sits in my garage.

I think I'm going to just look at it for a while. Everything needs attention, there's nothing I see that is acceptable as is, but that fox on the seat pan, he's giving me a wink. The most pride I think would come from a full restoration, one part at a time, scouring eBay and sanding my fingers raw until they bleed. The other option would be flat tracker. I don't even know if it runs and I'm not sure where to even start.

I think I'm just going to stare at it for a while. Wrap my mind around it all.

This much I do know... Haven't found one on Craigslist using craigshelper expanded to a 500 miles radius. Haven't seen a complete bike on eBay since I've been looking. Parts aren't easily found, there's a total of maybe 80 parts on eBay right now that will fit it, parts that were common to other bikes of the time.

I can't even guess at the rarity of the bike.

I'm going to go stare some more. I imagine it was beautiful when new.

Welcome to a world of frustration and guilt. May you compartmentalize it successfully and pawn it off on the next guy in due time.

Kidding aside, best of luck and I look forward to seeing the progress!

Ouch.....I told ya she sat in a shed for years and years and years! Also said if you hated it that it would make a wonderful boat anchor....You know what? I never lifted the seat on that thing, so the Fox sticker is a surprise to me as well!

Like I said Kevin, I'll do any amount of research that you throw my way. There is also a you-pull-it grave yard somewhere around here that has 1000's of cars and probably a few hundred bikes...they may have some things that you need and I will gladly make a trip for you to see if I can gather any much needed parts.

You aren't kidding that it is rare....part of the reason I've been terrified to start on it...that and there are a few other bikes in line before it on the resto list.

You should have seen the duct tape job they were doing to every item on that trailer....there was NOTHING coming off. It would have been funny though to see that hoola hoop go bouncing down the road at 70mph.

I got to thinking, I may have a generic Kawasaki manual from 196X sometihng ,that has some good info or the rotary valve stuff, let me see if I can find it, it might well have been left @ the old shop for them to destry ot do what ever they did with all the manuals ---

first success, first stumble.

the rod that goes from the swingarm to the outer rear brake cover has been fully restored and looks new. yayyy.

the rear axle shaft is stuck and isn't budging. sprayed it with penetrating oil and will let it seep in overnight. booo.

You may want to dip the whole bike in penetrating oil. Prepare for the three H method. Heat, hammer, hope.

a restoration guru on another site threw a dollar value of $1000 in pristine condition. If this is even remotely accurate there's not much sense in a showroom restoration approach. Seems a bitchin' little flat tracker might be the way to go.
