1975 Honda GL1000
Well, I got another project for the shop! I REALLY need to swear off craigslist for a while. A guy had a basket case GL1000 that he wanted to get rid of. $250 later I had a title in my hand and a Goldwing in my truck! It's stripped down to the frame and all of the parts and accessories are in neat little bags with appropriate labels. It will be a resto-mod, and she'll look sharp by the time she hits the road again!
It turns out, the guy that had the bike shares a few mutual friends since he works at Falcon Jet. Small world!! The guy builds cabinets for business jets and wanted to restore this Oldwing but after work became hectic (6-7 days a week, up to 12-hour days) and about to sell his house and move, he just wanted the bike to go away. He listed it for $300 in late September and couldn't figure out why no one wanted the bike. I inquired through email and found out he listed his phone number incorrectly. D'oh. Then after I had decided I had to have this bike he asked, "Would you be able to do $250?" Didn't even have to haggle with him at that point

Sweet. My Yamaha XS750 came to me in the same condition. Still a work in progress. It's only been 8 years, lol.

One of my neighbors stopped by to see what I was up to and was blown away I would buy a Goldwing. "Of all bikes in the world, you don't strike me as the Goldwing type," he said. I then had to inform him that Goldwings back in the day were Honda's display of technological advancement, not so much the big minivans on two-wheels as you see today. After he saw that boxer-4 sitting in the shop his jaw dropped

Good looking bike, Doc!
I've already made an account with NGWclub and about to start a build thread over threre. I found it strange that I couldn't post a URL of my 'wrecked 919' thread on their site.
Tonight's progress was productive. I laid out all of the engine parts and started seeing if anything was missing. So far, so good. The only thing I see missing from the bike are the headlight and trim ring (but I do have a NICE bucket) as well as the turn signals. The previous owner mentioned the bike was decked out with a windjammer and bags/trunk which would explain why those specific parts would be missing.

Subscribed. This could be a really cool project.

Alright, the vision has started! She's gonna look pretty slick!
The color scheme-
Red frame and swingarm
White "false tank" sides, side covers, and a carbon wrapped center door.
Black timing belt covers, valve covers, and rear end unit
Red engine guards
carbon wrapped headlight trim ring
2nd gen SV650 rear integrated taillight
A broad red stripe on the side covers with a white "Goldwing" emblem/script
Chrome on the bike will be limited (headlight bucket, fenders, and maybe a few other items)
I'm toying with the idea of a single carb setup. I'm sure the Randakk kit is superior if you have stock exhaust, but the last thing I want to do is put the dual vacuum cleaners back under the bike
I'd lean a lot more towards the stock setup if it wasn't already disassembled
Here are a few Goldwings I have taken some notes of-

Here's some in the same wheelhouse as what you're going for. Kept them on the phone incase I stumbled on a good deal like you got!

Hey...that's my name!
I love the old Goldwings when they are stripped down and cafe'd out. Such sweet sounding boxer engines.

I've been weighing my options lately (about all I can manage to get done between work, school, family, etc.) and I contacted a guy that I almost bought a '78 Goldwing from. He has a bike and a half (complete project plus a complete other bike minus frame). Keep in mind he would sell everything for $500. After asking how much he would sell just his engine and carbs for, he replied $250. He then asked me if I would do $100 plus my disassembled engine and carbs to trade for his complete ready-to-go engine plus ready-to-rebuild carbs.
From what I gather, my bike has its original engine with 55k miles on it. He is unsure of the exact mileage of his donor motor. The '75s had a little better top end on them due to different carbs, cams, and a few other little things here and there when compared to the '78s.
Decisions, decisions. I pretty much need a full gasket set for my motor and to clean up the motor since all of the chrome is flaking off the timing, valve, and rear accessory covers.
On a good note, I did strip the upholstery from the seatpan

Progress is slow but is still progress nonetheless!
After spending much time on ngwclub.com, I have seen far too many arguments for keeping OEM carbs vs. Single Carb conversions that after weighing the pros and cons, I've decided on a single carb conversion.
With that said, I have a Bendix/Stromberg WW 2-barrel carb on its way
It was $27 shipped and looks to be in decent shape. I'll obviously have to install new gaskets and look into rejetting it for the application onto the Goldwing. I have a few neighbors and friends that lit up when I mentioned a WW carb (shows how old of people I hang out with
) and they are all happy to lend a hand tuning the carb when the time comes
I've also received a 919 master cylinder, levers, and clutch perch from a fellow WT member that will find it's way onto the 919 handlebars that are going on this ol' gal (call this project a GoldHornet or HornetWing? lol)
Also found a Clymer manual for $20 shipped! Woohoo!!
So far the mod list includes-
919 handlebars (check)
919 master cylinder (check)
compact kubota/tractor alternator
Bendix/Stromberg WW single carb
Updated ignition (probably dyna-s)
Suspension (Progressive front springs, still pondering rear shocks)
I measured the forks of the 919 vs. the Goldwing, and the 919 is 43mm in diameter but the Goldwing is 37mm in diameter
But, I still have modding in mind!

Well after a year and a half of having the project in my way I decided to post her up on Craigslist. A man named Van called once saying he was interested in a few parts on the bike so I never called him back since I didn't want to part it out. He called me again the other day saying he wanted to buy the whole thing so I returned his call. Turns out, he restores 75-77 Goldwings and SOHC CB750s. We talked for a few minutes and he said he's in my neck of the woods that day and would like to possibly buy the entire basket case if the price was right. I told him $300 and he agreed!
I asked him what he thought about it as a project, and he said, "I hope you don't get upset, but this bike will probably not see the road again, but the parts will live on and keep other bikes going. The Lester mags were what brought me here, but the framed title sealed the deal."
So, there goes that. I would have loved to restore that bike, but it was really too far gone. I sleep easy knowing the parts are in good hands.
