Totalled my 919

Well, looking for a little sympathy here or at least a shoulder to whine on. Real life has kept me off the boards for a while but I've hung around here for a bit.

Went down hard yesterday on the 9'er. Wish I could tell you what happened but I have no memory of the accident until they loaded me on life flight. Broke my ankle and broke two vertebrae but thank God no cord damage. I'm lying in the hospital now, waiting for the surgeons to patch me up.

I was headed home from work mid morning to grab some stuff another guy at work needed. I remember pulling out onto the northbound feeder of I-45 in Clear Lake, TX. I don't remember anything else until the nice people were loading me on the helicopter.

I'm pretty sure the bike is totalled. I'll probably have a few bits and pieces to sell like a left over seat and such. I'm pretty sore but I'm lucky to still have all my parts working.

Life goes on, thank God for good gear.

David

Wow Dave I just can't believe this! I've been wondering whats happened to you cause I haven't heard from you in a while. Man you must have been coming out of that mess at NASA Rd1? I hate driving through there right now much less riding. I can't tell you how many bikes I've seen and heard crashed around there.

Where are you right now, which hospital?

Boy I hope you heal up really fast and don't go through to much pain. Also when you get to feeling like it, I've got a trailer and will help you go pick up your bike and bring it home if that's what you want to do with it.

My best prayers for you!

Glad you survived, David. That whole area is ridiculous, and the cagers in NASA/Clear Lake are the worse. All the construction at that intersection doesn't make things any better.

Yeah, I can't stand going through Clear Lake, and NASA Rd. 1. Cagers are hitting bikers all the time around there.

Surgery is relatively routine, I have a burst fracture of T-12 and a compression fracture of L-1. I get some titanium screws and rods put in my back and some more titanium hardware installed in my ankle.

Apparently some little old lady nailed me but they are ticketing me for failure to yield. I can't really argue with them because I have total amnesia about the event. Disappointing that maybe I am at fault but everybody makes mistakes.

Sorry to hear of your accident. I'm sending lots of positive healing energy your way.

For all you ATGATT adherents -- one piece missing might have been helpful in this accident: a full back protector, either built in to the jacket / leathers or a standalone with retention straps. The latter is less prone to shifting in a fall especially if the jacket is a loose fit. Unfortunately there is little in the way of gear that will protect against long bone fractures unless you don't mind looking like Iron Man and weighing about 20 kilos more than usual.

No memory of a sudden traumatic event, especially if it involves an impact to the head, is very common. Another characteristic of this amnesia is between 30 seconds to a minute before the accident will also be missing. The most commonly accepted explanation for this involves disrupting the short term memory accumulation of nodes to establish a long term holographic matrix (Yes, human memory is holographic!) being disrupted by a shock wave through the brain from the impact. I'm willing to bet that you will never have any memory of the event. I sure don't, for which a goodly part of me is grateful!

Ah well -- Here's to a quick and full recovery.

Rob

If it has already been done, it is safe to assume it is possible to do it.
On the other hand, if it has not been done never assume it is impossible to do it.

Sorry to hear about your misfortune David. I'm glad it wasn't any worse than what it was. The ray-cages they're going to but in your back are pretty trick, have the Doc show'em to you if he can. Here's to a speedy recovery.

PS - PM me your address sometime and I'll send you one of these.

Thanks guys for keeping my spirits up. The pain is not too bad but the waiting sucks. 2 days waiting for surgery. Then a week to recover. Then 3 months of a back brace and physical therapy.

I'll miss the 9er, the best bike I have owned so far. But I will probably try something else if I get another bike. I think I want to give a sporting L-twin a shot, maybe a ducati or maybe even the big Buell 1125.

Or maybe after I go through all this crap I'll hang up my boots and cage it for the rest of my life. Dunno, I'll have to think about it.

Sorry about your accident but glad you are around and able to tell us about it. Hope the healing goes fast. During the four months I was recovering from my severely broken leg last year the good people at Wristtwisters sure helped pass the time. Good luck.
