Lightbulb swap colors...candy red to asphalt?

would it be possible for me to swap my tank, rear plastics and front fenders for the asphalt 2002 look? If so, how many tomatoes are we talkin' here? I just love the malt asphalt look.:

I would be willing to bet that for a few hundred bucks you could have someone paint the tank and fenders for you - professionally. I believe that Color-Rite has the paint and if you tore down the parts for the painter it wouldn't be real expensive. There isn't even a clearcoat.

Yeah, asphalt is the only way to go with the 919 imo. To me it just seems to lose something visually when its a different color, not as edgy. I was having trouble finding one out here in CA and was contemplating buying a new one and having it painted when I finally stumbled across an '02 in perfect condition and bought it the same day!

'02 Honda 919 - She's the only one for me!

You can also get a full set fairly cheap if you keep your eyes open. Here is a start:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...5601990&rd=1,1

I know someone with a tank in pretty good condition - prob $125 shipped. New fender should be around $75.

Noooooooooo! You can't do that! The 2006 red is the best color ever to go on a motorcycle!

But if you must, a trade sounds a lot cheaper than trying to get it painted.

Yup, the malt gray rules.

Tho I have wondered who the hell at Honda came up with "Smoke". It should have been called "Graphite" or "Gunmetal". Actually, I've had more people comment that the color of mine is "Asphalt". Even had one guy argue with me about! Whatever the how - the '03 colors are better suited for the 919 persona IMO.

The red is nice tho!

Have to chime in and say the Red is better (best). They hit the color on the nose with the 06'... Don't do the swap... you'll regret it. But I'll take a glass of the "single malt"!!!!!

Ok, my turn. The "Candy Red" color is, as far as reds go, beautiful on the '06/'07 919. No doubt it has driven increased sales as we have speculated on previous threads. The only problem I have with it is, well, that it is RED. The asphalt matte black is the perfect color for the 919. Sorry, but it is. And the matte smoke runs a close second, possibly a tie on perfect color. Here is why. The 919 is not the 'bleeding edge', razor boy racer bike it pretends to be wearing red. It is simply a well built, great running, punch packing, all-around perfect package for an adult. A swiss army knife, if you will, of street machines. (do swiss army knifes come in matte black? if not, then make that a USMC issue K-bar.) Adults don't want to be noticed by 1) other razor boy racers, 2) chicks with way too many tattoos and face hardware, and most importantly, 3) the police. That said, as beautiful of a color as the "Candy Red" is.. it's simply poser dressing on a cold and well equipped gear-head salad. So the 919 has graduated to bling city... fine... but let's not forget what this horse galloped in wearing. Absent glossy paint, the 919 still shined as a damn fine steed.

BTW, it looks great in any color. Just having fun here. oh.. plus I am very flexible about the tattoo and face hardware wearing chick thing.. as long as she is HOT!

When I bought mine, I was pretty upset that it came in red and not the matte black. That was the color I wanted. Someday, over a winter in colder climates, I will spend the money and switch it over to the color I wanted to begin with. Right now, I gotta ride, so red it will stay!!

I totally agree with this. The red looks great, but it changes the attitude of the bike to me. The flat black and gray make it look more raw, more designed for a purpose and not an aesthetic, a little rough maybe, while the red makes it look more grand, more classy. The silver, green, and glossy black all lie between these two. All of this is IMHO of course.

Most solid colors don't equate to attitude with me. And without plastic, there isn't a lot of paint to begin with. When I look at 599's and 919's the only ones that stand out are the green and the yellow.

I would agree with that, although I would add the red to the ones that stand out. The reasoning behind wanting the flat black, for me anyway, was that it wouldn't stand out. I bought the 919 so I wouldn't be part of the crowd. The red color almost looks like Honda wanting the 919 to become part of the sportbike crowd. Fortunately, I don't feel that happened.

Maybe you're right. But since it's the same red they put on the GL1800, I'm skeptical that was their intent.

Okay, point taken. But everyone pretty much agrees that Honda was trying to boost sales, as the bike is not that popular here in the states. The new color seems to be part of that. In the end, I just wish they still offered it in the flat black.

Honda's color limited production is weird. The ST crowd is in the same boat -- one color per year and most would say not the best choice either.

Goota say it, asphalt is the way to go. All flat colors, little to no chrome, with nice black calipers as opposed to gold. The first thing that made me want the 919 was the raw-ness of it. It had a no nonsense musle car kind of look to it, and with a little bit a tinkering it looks down right bad ass. Not the fastest thing on the road, but it's fast enough to make everyone take notice when I'm zipping by them...I get compliments on it's paint all the time by people who are in and out of the motorcycle fad, and have had a few people ask me for paint codes so that they could apply to non-honda bikes and cars. Maybe honda should go back to the drawing board and turn off the color...

Smoke is a great color combo as well.

Funny you should say that. When I first brought my 919 home, I cleaned it up and stood there taking it all in. I was thinking that it had that muscle car look like the first generation Camaros.

I also have equated it to a snub-nose revolver. Sure, there are LOTS of guns out there with a bigger bang, but for outright raw effectiveness, I'll take mine in a handy package any day.

I plan to die young, as late as possible.

The color is what drew my attention to the 2002 in the first place, then I looked at the rest of it. I said, after about five minutes, I'll take it.

Also, think about the trend the 919 started:
We now have flat black R1's and R6's, gsxr600's (well partly flat black at least), rat rods, Harley-Davidson even stole the color for more than one bike, the VFR, Kawisaki also went matte (though in blue). And Ducati adopted the color for almost every bike in there lineup, who would've thought, a Ducati imitating a Honda!

You would think Honda would pick up on this. If everyone else jumped on the band wagon, why did Honda get off. Some styles of bike have flash and shine to them, some others are bland and predicatable, while others just look mean. I love the 919, but I wish Honda would do more than JC Whitney cosmetic upgrades to the thing. It leaves on to think that they just happened across the no nonsense style by accident, and left that way, never realizing that that had tapped into an image, or persona. The Acura NSX is probably one of the finest exotic sportcars ever built, but never sold very well in that market because it lacked the charactor of an exotic car. Honda always seems to rest to heavily on the quality and refinement of thier products (which is very important), while missing the boat on the charactor of them. Oh well, maybe they'll trip onto this theme sometime again in the future when I'm ready to find a replacement for my 919...

I think something like the Anthracite color Shoei uses would be cool. Minus the gloss of course.
