Strange top end noise

Iv'e got a question for the mighty oracle that is Wrist Twisters.

My 07 9'er is just due for her 12k service, and during the last few rides, when the thermo fan kicks in there is a ticking/crackling sort of sound from the top end. At first I thought it may be a bearing in the fan, but if I let her idle, get hot then shut her down, and switch back on without the motor running the fan runs but no weird noise. Could it be a vacuum leak when hot, or maybe just a hot radiator, I'm not sure.....

Thought you guys may have answers which may steer me in the right direction when talking to the mechanic. (I hate paying for services, cant wait till theres no warranty in a way)

Thanx in advance.....

Probably a long shot, but I've seen a car with a hole in the radiator produce similar 'odd noises.' Without the water pump running, the leak was not apparent. With it running, it was squirting into the fan. Fun!
