Questions about '02 919

Hello...I am a new member and needed some help and/or advice. I just recently sold my Ninja 636 and I am looking at a 2002 919 with about 7500 miles. No mods done to bike but the color has got me puzzled. The present owner says he has a clear title and it has not been repainted that he knows of but it is gray/silver with silver or chrome Honda wings and 919 decals under clear coat. Only color I have ever seen on 02 is matte black. Was silver offered as a late 02 color or has it been repainted? Is there easy way to find out by looking at bike or other parts. The present owner is 60+ in age and bought the bike from his brother as a second bike to his Goldwing Trik so i dont think it has been abused by him. He is asking $4500 for it. Any help would greatly be appreciated. Thank you. TD.

According to Mike's help post 02 only came in Matte Black So either it has been painted or parts swapped out.

https://www.wristtwisters.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=1209

having bought a used bike and after the fact wished I'd took some closer looks and questioned it a bit more and didn't I'll tell you to do just that even if your ready to buy there are aways more bikes to look at just give it a little time and think about the things that have been painted or repaired and you can prolly figure some tell tell signs that something screams don't buy me because it will always be in your mind wished I found that other bike a little eariler.

I had looked over all of charlotte for my bike and thought i had looked everywhere. After buying it 2 days later i walk into a cycle shop that i had gone to several times that month and low and behold there is an exact 919 that I was looking for without the little scratch that i couldn't explain, and was very close in miles and money asked. Don't think i got a bad deal it's just in my mind as it is in yours! Make sure you can live with not knowing for sure and if you can do it and enjoy cause it really KICKS Arhse!!! As an all around BIKE!! and gets 40mpg while thrashing it in the city!!!

02 should be black, Is it possible it could be an 03, think that was the year for the gray. anyways I think 4500 is probably in the ballpark for an 02 with that many miles. An 03 would probably book for 3-500 more.

Are you sure it's an 02?
It's quit posable it could be a late 01 or early 03. They came in silver.
In case you didn't check, due to the excitement of getting a 919 , see if the sticker behind the headlight looks original and says 2002. If it does then I'm at a loss on the color. The original owner might of replaced the tank, fender, tail with 03,04 parts because he liked the silver.

Hmm, not sure but if he got it from his brother he should know or be able to find out if it has been repainted. first yr for the 919 was 02, and they were only offered in Matte Black in the US. If the sticker on the steering neck says 2002 model right beside the vin# that must be what it is

Sorry about the 01 date. I was including the European market "Hornet" that's been around since 98.

two things to address here...

the hornet available in the uk since 98 was not a 919.. twas a 599.

and yes silver was an available colour in 02.

I had the option of matte black, silver, or candy apple blue.

all three sitting beside each other in the dealership.

I have a 02 919 but up here in Canada it was sold as the 900F. the decals say 900F and it's blue. Black may be the only color for the 02 919 in the US. Check under the seat and see what the colour code is.

You're going to love the 919. I put some miles on my friends 636 and I'm always glad to get back on my Honda. It will be much more comfortable and the low end power will be much better.

My last bike was silver. My 919 is red. The 919 is much faster so it must be the color.

Back to the original post, a color scheme that did not match the VIN would set off alarm bells, especially if the paint appears to be "factory" paint. That means somebody replaced every single piece of painted stuff.

Don't always go by the frame sticker, I think the frame sticker can say when it was made which is the same as the model year. Do a little googling and figure out how to read the model year from the VIN and check the model year. I'll bet you a beer that it is a 2003 model year.

i think 04 had black stickers, makin these 03 skins as dj said...

btw, i believe the 'helpful' sticky lists mike's euphemistic color names...and Honda sales stuff uses something like 'Asphault' to describe the combined base coat and clear/mat coat for 02 and 'Alien Snot Green' to describe the 04 (i swear, i read it in a brochure )

02 Mat Gunpowder Black Metallic NH436/NH436M
03 Mat Gunpowder Black Metallic NH436/NH436M
03 Mat Bullet Silver NH389/NH389M
04 Digital Silver Metallic NHA30/NHA30M
04 Mat Peridot Green Metallic GY126/GY126M

there are specific codes for the stickers available, wings of varying color from black to silver to ....
