Penske special in September?

To start out --- I have no connection to Penske or am benefiting from this post in any way....

Starting September 27th..... Penske is running a special.... The deal is $499 ($625 normal) for a brand new Penske 8900E Series Sport Shock custom sprung & valved to your riding style (available for the Honda 919).... then you get a certificate to upgrade the shock to a (8983) for only $375. (this adds the remote compression cylinder, normally a $475 upgrade) Coupon good for the entire next year of 2011.....so, ride it the way it is for now with the option to upgrade later if you decide you need more....

So --- have been on the fence as to which rear shock to buy for my 9'er. Newer 919 w/ rebound, old F3 rebuilt, ohlins, penske......Zoomar recently just sold a Penske shock in the for sale section that I didn't even know existed for the 919. It was a Penske 8900E series sport shock. This shock is basically a custom made shock and a stripped down version of the Double/triple clicker Penske 8983 ---- The 8900E doesn't have a remote compression cylinder.....but does have custom damping, a custom spring, compression, rebound, spring pre-load, and a ride height adjustment. The interesting thing that I found out...... its the SAME shock body/internals as the 8983.... you can also send a 8900E in later to Penske and have the remote compression cylinder added later. (or even converted to a triple clicker for that matter)

------ I'm pulling the trigger as soon as this special is available.....Thought you all should know.....

Here's the link to the Penske page on the 8900E. Orders will be taken directly through Penske.

Ask your buddies at Penske if they'll do a 599 shock.

I have no connection or friends at Penske, I'm just passing on a good deal that Im going to do myself.

They do however have the 599 listed as a bike they can make a shock for.....I'd send them an email.

This special isn't posted anywhere...... I emailed Penske 2 days ago asking if I could special order the 8900e and also asked what the cost was for the remote cylinder.... The guy from Penske then replyed back with this info.

I'm sure it's just a matter of calling up Penske on the 27th and giving them your custom order......

This is the email.....I'm with-holding Penske sales people names and emails. If you call them/email them...,I'm sure you'll get the same info.

Brad,

You are in luck! We are about to run a special on this shock! It will start on September 27th and carry on till the end of October. The deal is $499 ($625 normal retail) brand new built for your weight and bike…then you will get a certificate to purchase the (8983) upgrade for only $375 ($475 Normal Retail) within the calendar year of 2011. You can purchase it direct from me.

Being it they're running a special (trying to blow shocks out the door), I wonder if they'd entertain doing a $399 group buy?

No doubt excellent for the street, but I'd be real leery of using a simple 8900E for serious Track Days useage. Extremely leery.

Can't imagine this shock being worst than a 2003 stocker ,which I've used for street, track, and the gap, with no issues.

Same basic shock as their 8983..... Doesn't work out? Do another Penske upgrade. It's that simple.

+1 anything is better than an '03 shock.

For sure, can't be worse. Good on you for tracking it on a 03 stocker. I did the build before ever doing a track day so can't say what a pure stock chassis would be like. I'm curious, any kind of vices you have experienced ? Are you grinding on the pegs or levers ? (I have never touched a lever, and don't want to)

Not too many bikes can give a supermoto a run for it.....lol.

Remeber the WR450 you did a run with? Showing him a wheel every corner......he went home and sold his sumo after that......haha, still walkin a little funny.

Hmmm, me thinks that your safe riding is like safe sex, in other words there is no such thing. SafeR yes, and for sure the riding was safeR than crash mode riding would be. Sounds like you all had a real fun ride that was uneventful in negative terms, excellent, and I trust you manage to keep it that way. One of our favourite roads around here gets used for a major cattle drive that leaves incredible amounts of cattle manure over miles of road. Rain rides take on a whole new dimension after that !

Its just a photographer that makes a living hanging out on this road in the Smokey Mountains. Its in a forest preserve..... hard gritty pavement, no driveways, angled corners ---- 311 curves in 11 miles.

Every week, Killboy posts up the highlight photos from the previous week.

If you're a track junkie and like the corners.....some day you'll have to make the trek.

now ----- back to the Penske! LOL.

Anything is better than stock..., but by that same logic as applied above why not skip the Penske and go straight for the Ohlins which is obviously the best on the market and industry standard? That way you not only have the functionality, but also the personal confidence in the product which is in most cases more important than how it actually works LOL

When I look at that price and compare to what I have sunk into my Penske so far, I lose my appetite. But at least I'm happy with the Penske as it is now. If I wasn't happy, I'd be past mere loss of appetite and into wooffing my cookies and ranting.

Thanks for the info and the link

I'm the one who ended up with Zookmor's Penske.
Unfortunately, I haven't had a chance to get it mounted.
I had a lot of stuff on my plate shortly after I received it and haven't had a chance to properly get it set up & installed. I'm currently devoting a lot of ride time to finishing my garage, re-seeding my lawn, & trying to work in an exercise routine to loose a few lbs. In all reality, this is probably going to be a winter project for me - you know, a reason to enjoy my newly finished man cave of a garage.

For those interested in the deal, Zookmor did send me a couple photos indicating a slight alteration to the frame that I'm told is necessary to make it fit:

(that's the stock shock in the pic)
It's a slight alteration that can be done with a dremel tool. I started tearing my bike down to do the procedure but ran out of time & energy.
I found it to be a bit of a tight space but it's obviously do-able.

Now that I know it has potential for upgrading, I just might look into it before I try to install it... I've got all winter to tinker with it.

Abba Zaba, you my only friend.
