Oil Change Blooper

Yesterday while changing my oil, I clean broke off the goofy little flat blade hanging down in front of the oil plug. There are 4 hanging down kinda like cooling fins. Looks like they were made to break off and start a stress crack into the crank case. Any one know what computerized idea this is for?

Mine broke off during my first oil change. At first I was pissed off, but now I don't care, it's been out of the way for every oil change since.

(I bought the bike used, 1 year old low miles, so it wasn't like it broke with only a few hundred miles, but still. . . Just a crappy design.)

Pretty sure those are there for the engine to sit upright if removed from the bike. Several people here have have removed that one when changing oil.
