Newbie to this forum

Hello, I just bought a 2007 919 today. I traded in my dead Aprilia Shiver toward it. My wife has a 599, which I talked her into (and she now loves). I talked her into it because the first bike I fell in love with was my dad's Honda 400/4. So, I probably should have bought the 919 instead of the Shiver, live and learn...... My other bike is my "baby", and that is my 2007 ZX10. However, the 10 doesn't make a great running around bike and it isn't all that much fun to ride when my wife is following me. I have ordered up a bunch of little stuff to make modifications to the 919 (rear turn signal eliminator, frame sliders, tank protector, front turn signal, Givi screen....). The bike already had Staintune exhaust, a PCIII, and Renthal bars. So, I look forward to searching this forum for information.

Thanks, Steve

Welcome Steve,

Feel free to ask all the questions you have about how to spend your hard earned cash

Seriously, check out the important topics sticky.
Which sliders are you getting?

Curious about the Shiver and what the autopsy revealed.
It uses the same motor as the Dorsoduro, which I wouldn't mind test riding when they arrive in 09.

Mike

To answer the Shiver questions... I had to tow it to the shop 4 times in five months, from speedo sensor failing to leaks to recall work (3 separate different engine maps in 5 months) to being completely dead after riding in the rain (a few others had this happen, reportedly due to unsealed or poorly sealed connectors)........... Then, the dealer had some issues too. The Shiver was great to ride and terrible to own (it does use the same engine as the Dorso). Here are a couple of pictures (including the Shiver...).

Some states have the so called lemon law. Three strikes and your out! Does Washington have such a law on the books?
Your Shiver definitely qualifies as a LEMON.

Yes, Washington has Lemon Law laws. However, they require the bike to be 750 CC or larger, the Shiver is 749. As bad as Aprilia has been toward the other folks that I know of who have already gotten rid of their Shivers (note, the Shiver has been in the US for 6 months and I know of 4 people prior to me that have already gotten rid of theirs due to so many problems), I decided to just be done with it and took my lumps (versus seeing whether or not their lawyers would notice).

On a different note, I ordered the LSL slider and Givi 240 screen. Hopefully those are decent, since I have had good luck with them in the past (and I saw your pictures of the Sato slider did, thank you!).

Thanks, Steve

What was leaking and where?

Damn... 1 freekin' cc under; that sucks. Petition your state representatives, get them to change the law. IMO: All new registered motor vehicles no matter what size engines should be covered by the lemon law.

Side note: I assume the sliders are LOS? They are top notch.

The sliders are these from Spiegler:

http://spieglerusa.com/cfm/FrameSliders.cfm

They have or three mounting points depending upon the bike. Are these the same ones you are talking about?

As far as where it was leaking.... From the water pump housing (new seal took care of that), oil from the rear valve cover (not much, never fixed), and in 2500 ish miles I put a little coolant in it 4 times with nothing ever being seen on the ground (that was a really bad sign, but I never even got a chance to address that problem....).

Thanks, Steve

Headgasket? Did you check the oil for discoloration?

Leatherwings has those sliders. One of the mounting points is on the case. I'd return them and get the Motavation or LOS.

Not the same ones Steve.

It appears these LSL sliders use the motor mount and the frame. Let us know when you get them. Might be a potential problem.

It might have been a headgasket, and a few other owners were/are having the same issue. I didn't check the oil, was too busy with other breakdowns. I'll check those other sliders.

Thanks, Steve

Those are the ones, but that's the wrong picture.
Make sure you get the improved version II with the threaded rod, not the weaker all-thread.

Funny thing about the mirrors is the bike doesn't actually have them, they broke one after that picture was taken. I'll eventually replace the mirrors. My wife loves the look of her seat, thinks it is a little hard, but has to have it. At 5'2" (her overestimation) and about 115 lbs, she needed the seat cut down and softer springs.

Thanks, Steve

Welcome Steve. Sorry to hear about your experience with the Shiver, but thanks for sharing with us. The Shiver was on my short list of bikes after going to the motorcycle show last fall. Glad I decided to get another 919 instead!
