New 919, Have a question on engine noise...

First of all, came from a 91 750 Nighthawk and I love the 919. One question
and hope I can explain it properly. My question is with the engine and a "spark knock" type of noise I can hear below about 4000 revs. For example, If in any gear below 3.5-4K revs and go to accelerate slightly (load engine), I can hear what I can only compare to what my small block chevy race motors with forged pistons sounded like cold, a sort of slapping noise. The bike had 5 miles on it last week when I bought it new. I noticed it at the shop when I rode it. The svc mgr said it was normal but I'd like another opinion. I don't think it's detonation and I use premium fuel. I don't think it's tappet adjustment as the noise is not constant, goes away when I let off throttle. It also seems louder when the engine is cold. Does 919 have forged pistons? Maybe it's the piston skirts? Any advise?

Thanks,

Vic

Fuel injectors. Is this your first FI bike? Even if it isn't, the nakedness adds to the noise/flavor. You can probably use regular gas, save yourself some money, and get the same or better performance. The fuel injectors make a racket when loaded below 4K. Ride it.

Howdy.

Yes, this is my first FI bike. I will take your advise and "ride it". In fact, I will do that right now!

Thanks,

Vic

FI and air box/intake noise. It's nothing to worry about. I noticed the same thing with mine when I first got it. Totally normal.

Just get a helmet with better sound protection and the noise will go away. Seriously, my bike is fairly new and when I listen to it with no helmet on it sounds funky, but it's normal.

Hi everyone! I'm new here too I've had my 05 919 for about a week now and damn is it an awesome bike!

I had been worried about the same sound on mine until I read on here it was most likely the fuel injectors, I've never had a naked FI bike so I've never heard them before.

Ride and enjoy!!!

I love that sound. 3200 rpm and the thing feels locked and loaded.

Enjoy your 919s for what they are... all fun
