Mounted the Wheels & Rotors...

OK, before you look... I would really appreciate HONEST opinions on the wheels, please!!

I wanted them to match the red paint on the bike, but when mounted and out in the daylight, they obviously look alot lighter. This may be because it's a large area of red, as opposed to the checkers being smaller squares within a black medium (not to mention the fade job). So what do you think?

The powdercoater says he can redo them a darker red, with a satin finish. he believes the flat finish may have given it that lighter hue. A very reputable local shop owner (Patrick @ Motorcycles Unlimited) believes the same. The only problem is, I would have to take off the wheels again, dismount the tires (again), the rotors (again), then pay to remount (again).... so I dunno what to do? It's not quite the red I wanted, but maybe I'm just being too nit-picky.... because I did get alot of compliments and thumbs ups on the road today.

OK, here are the pics! (btw, I forgot to clean the lens, but it made for some neat effects!):

I think darker red would look better.

Wow, you have done a lot to that bike. I like the red checker in the paint. My honest opinion for the red wheels is that it doesn't look real bad but I would like to see it with just the spoke sections of the wheels in red instead of the whole wheel. It is too light, but not bad.

From my personal experiences. . .if I had a knew what I wanted visually and didn't get there on the first try, I really won't be happy 'til it's done right. ---Go darker red and you'll be able to sleep better. And the MBD looks nice black WITHOUT any red. The wheels stand out and look great!

BTW Rob. . .your bike has transformed immensely! Congrats!!

Thanks bros! Yeah, I did want it darker, but I'm gonna keep it a week and see if it grows on me. I really like the fact that the powdercoater has no problem redoing them to make me happy!

And Roy, I'm gonna keep the bellypan black, so it can be a base for "sponsor" decals and such. I also agree that the pivot bracket should not be red. Maybe black, but I'm actually leaning towards leaving it silver, while the swingarm goes black. I think keeping it silver will have a better visual impact than either red or black.

Thanks for all your inputs!

I'll probably remove that SBM decal. I'm a member of a local club (SuperBikeMoto), and that's the club's logo/decal. I think I'll just keep it there for a little while, then take it off eventually. It comes off pretty easily.

It's not my bike, but like the wheels just as they are. Bold. But pics on the internet and looking at something in person can be 2 different things. You're the one that has to be happy.

All those those stickers "cheapen' what is otherwise a very classy custom bike. Those guys aren't paying you to advertise for them. Reminds me of NASCAR.....

Being a fan of red...and I would've never considered painting the wheels red like that as I would've thought it might of been too much...But I have to say I like it...It brings out the other red accents you have on it...Great job

Carry the checkerboard pattern into the rims with the spokes red. I think I would photoshop that before trying it but might be cool. Might also be outrageously expensive (black tape squares maybe?). Anyway on a more realistic note, the red does look a bit light trying to go to orange on my monitor. But pics on computers have a way of not being accurate on colors and ultimately it is going to have to be your call.

Excellent job on the bike, looking great!

I think it looks good as it is but a little darker red would make it better, but as stated it's hard to tell those subtle differences sometimes looking at a pic on the internet. I also agree with everyone about the stickers, I think it takes away from the bike a bit unless they are actual sponsers. At least the SBM one needs to move, I think it would look a lot better on the swingarm if you wanted to keep it on the bike.

I normally wouldn't give so much of my own opinion on someone else's bike because it's what you want, not what we want, but you seemed to be asking for it so take it as you will. All in all it does look really great Rob. Excellent job!

I understand fixating on something and not being happy until it's exactly the way you want it, that's my personality as well. Not sure it's worth tearing it all back apart for a slight shade darker though as it looks great now, but you're the one that has to live with it. I do agree with the couple of people that have suggested making the outer rim black with red spokes, might break up the large area of red and make it more visually appealing perhaps.

You've really transformed your bike, like having a new motorcycle in the garage huh? Nice job!

Heck if you want to break up the red wheels a little bit, but a wide black stripe around the rim. I'm with Sbeau though I don't think it's worth tearing all apart again just to change the shade. I think it looks great, but the black stripe just might really add to it and if you don't like it just take it off.

Great idea, a stick on stripe would be an easy way to change up the looks a bit and easily reversible!

I'm with XRCajun on this one... Leave it the same color and put a black stripe on it.

I would put a little red on the belly pan, but that's just me. No one else seems to think it would look good.

If you decide to redo the wheels, wait till you need new tires.

Bike looks great, Rob

EDIT: I would remove the reflector and oem brake line clamps. And add some color to the windscreen?

+1

Break up all of that red with some black wheel lip stripes and maybe black accents on the rim spokes?

Also, maybe shoot a semi-gloss overcoat on the wheels? That will bring out a tad more color and will closely match the red on the tank.

Not quite whore red the way I'd like to see.
Looks a little light, maybe wannabe-whore-red.

A closer match to the red on the tank would have been better.

Still, the whole thing works.
Nice job.

Thanks for all the awesome feedback! I really do appreciate it.

I rode the bike yesterday for about 150 miles, and when I went to look at it this morning, with the brake dust and dirt on the wheels, it really did look better! So maybe I just need to keep the wheels dirty!!?

But you know what? I really don't want to tear it all down again, especially after not having barely ridden it since Dec. 5, when I first dropped it off at Magic's.

Magic was supposed to paint a red stripe on the stock wheels, as part of his package, but I decided to do the wheel swap instead. So he still owes me that! I'm gonna talk to him about painting a black stripe on these, or maybe he can mist it with some black paint, similar to how he did the fade on the checkers. I think that might look cool. Tim, the powdercoater, said he did match the red as best he could, but he understands it does not appear to do so, once mounted. I'm pretty sure Magic can work his "magic" and come up with something.

As far as the decals go... For those who may not be aware, the "919" on the bike are not decals, they were painted to give the bike a cafe racer theme, along with the checkered stripe. Check out http://www.cb750cafe.com/ and take a look at his cafe racers. On most of his bikes, he's got decals placed in such a way as to add to that character, or play off that theme. With that theme in mind, I always had the intentions to add "sponsor" decals to the bike, especially on the belly pan, and at angle just like we see them on racebikes. The SBM decal may be misplaced, though. That area seems like a relatively large flat space, and something needs to go there, but maybe not that! Something round, or not so square. I want the bike to "look" fun, because that's what the 919 is all about. Hmmm... Maybe I can put Harry the Hornet there?!

Bike looks badass!! I like the wheels as they are. My rear shock is red, funny you have a yellow one, is that aftermarket or ? Red would seemingly go with the theme, haha.

ps/but: I agree with some others that the branding decals cheapen the feel of what is otherwise a totally sweet 919. I've never really seen that "theme" pulled off well. Just personal opinion.

Obsession is a word the lazy use to define the dedicated.
