Metal Plating/anodizing

I've been thinking about this idea for awhile, as a different way to spruce up the ol' 919, as opposed to just paint/powdercoat/chrome?. How cool would it be to have copper-plated (and then clearcoated) forks, wheels, crash bars, etc? What do all of you think?

I just found a company in my area that does it...I will have to make some calls and find out about prices...

Metal Plating

I am pretty sure the OCC liberty bike was covered in copper. Actually looked a really nice finish regardless of opinions of OCC. I hope I've not put you off!

There has been a old Bonnie in NZ for sales for a year or so that has had all the chrome replated in brass - kind of weird and he wants way too much for it!

I'm a bit put off by copper at first, yet I remain intrigued.

With the right paint, copper would look pretty cool. Definitely unique. Polished up and shiny and I think you'd have a winner.

Go for it.

Agreed. Combined with the proper paint color, copper (used in moderation) could look really nice - and definitely unique!

I'm interested to see how this turns out!

This is still just pie in the sky at this point...

After thinking some more, and looking into the possibilities, im thinking a full repaint in dark forest green with a copper-plate stripe...either solid or checked. Then strip the rims, plate those, but leave the spokes black. I also want to do some SS mesh to dress up the hoses... maybe black powdercoat on the swingarm. Im going to have to play around with this idea for a bit before I make a real move....it would be easy to go too far...but I think it might be really awesome!

Now that scheme sounds good. Forest Green with a copper stripe

I saw a custom bike a guy had he called it a street fighter but I thought it was a chopper.
Almost all of the steel was blued and had a rustic copper look on all of the panels (some kind of anodizing process). The paint was a flat charcoal looking color. He also had a tanned alligator seat cover. The whole thing looked pretty badass. I don’t care for choppers or cruisers but I defiantly would have ridden that bike.

Before I'd even consider doing that I'd take a picture of my bike and photoshop (or ask someone to) that color onto the pieces you're considering doing! That might look pretty intriguing or it might look like crap!

That's mighty generous of you, I have little skill with photoshop...I'd really appreciate that!

What I'm looking to plate is the rims, bars, the fork uppers (the bigger part, lol), and my Givi bars...and the racing stripe, like this one

Here are some photos I found to help illustrate my idea

Unless you dig the patina that copper acquires, you're gonna be polishing as much as riding. Hmmm. Come to think of it, that sounds like a few Harley guys I know.

quick mockup

can't use any pics of my bike, i got no good ones (was too busy riding instead of taking pictures

So, what about this look. I don't have givi bars or what not so i went off the first example you gave me, and then a profile shot for the rims / forks, headlight ring, grab rail. I painted the metal sidings green to match the bike (a darker green than the uranium green...)

I don't know if you have a painted windscreen or not - so I left the instrument cluster alone since it would probably be covered up...(and not metal anyways...right?)

That is VERY close to what I have in mind...Thanks for doing it up for us to look at. I do currently have a flyscreen like the one in the picture...but it's Carbon-fiber and therefore unlikely to get painted. Since it's essentially a Buell Flyscreen, I bet I can find one to paint, though.

I was thinking more of a British Racing Green, a deep contrast against the copper. IMO don't do the entire wheel, paint the spokes black or very deep green. And don't green the small airbox covers (black?) but you could colour the side covers to match the tank. Easy on the copper so it is a highlight.

2c worth .......... with inflation surely it is 5c worth now?

Ok,

Using latest pics, here's what I could do with the black. I'm not sure how to portray "copper" reflections on such small pictures and tight shadows, but I colored them to show the concept.
