I guess I'm the odd man out here, I actually like the 919 better. Not everything about it, but I like it better than those.

The dual rear shocks are clearly a retro thing that could have worked on the 919, but I've have to see it. My 700S has a lower exhaust and dual rear shocks like that and it does have a cool factor to it.

I guess the fairing is really a matter of personal taste. It's nice to see that era of retro is still around, and it's nice, but I actually like the looks of a 919 better. I think it's the tank and headlight area that really have a clean look to it. IMO the 919 really does have a great look, it's not pure retro, yet does have analog gauges so it's a bit of a combo deal that just seems to work.

Having said that... I'd take one is someone is going to offer it :D

Good looks; do they perform?

$20,000 USD is a lot of money for a fat, slow motorcycle, even if it is very pretty. And this example is indeed very pretty. The lines are beautifully proportioned; that fairing/tank/seat/tail combination is classic. The exhaust is gorgeous as well. Since they say nothing in the article about engine modifications or weight, I assume that means no performance work or lightening has been done. Too bad.

Is it only me, or does the chainguard look way too big for its intended purpose? To my eye, it could be much lower (closer to the chain) and therefore much less obtrusive. Other than that, though, these are beautiful machines.

The price point is aimed at the lawyers, dentists and real estate agents (Sydney) out there, although they tend to go for the Harleys or the Italians, I reckon.

So they are saying AU$30K or US$20K for one of these. Let's see what we can get new in Australia (seeing the article is Australian)

Kawasaki Z900 (AU$$18,281 or US$12 248)
Also a retro cafe racer. (maybe not as "special" as the bike in the article, but a huge savings)

MT-10 (AU$21,149.00 or US$14 169 ) (MT-10 SP AU$ 24,349.00 or US$16 313)
Even on the special edition, you are saving thousands. It's not retro, but I know which one I'll choose and it won't be the Honda. It's not a retro, but for thousands less, I get one of the most awesome 1L Japanese bikes on the market today.

XSR900 (AU$14 850 or US$9950)
Retro at half the price, most probably double the technology.

GSX-S1000 (AU$$15,490 or US$10 387)
Not a retro, but must be the best bang for buck new, modern 1L naked outh there, for half the money than the Honda.

Honda CB1000R (AU$18443 or US$12 356)
If I had to choose between the two Honda's, it would be this one every-time. I even get a hint of retro thrown in, at thousands less.

BMW S1000R (AU$ 22 250 or US$14 907)
I thought I'd throw in one non-Japanese bike for kicks. Even the German's come in for less. This would be my pick of the bunch. The MT-10 would be a close runner up.
