Lil' Yellow Hornet

Well we're a two Hornet family now, bought the '04 599 I've been talking about in the "Lowering a 599" thread. https://www.wristtwisters.com/forum/s...ead.php?t=8655

Went back this morning, took along my air compressor and some tools, aired up the tires and took it for an extended ride. Ran great, I was surprised at its power and handling. It's a welterweight compared to my 919. My S.O. was able to ride it and get one foot on the ground at stops, she quickly fell in love with it, so I gave the guy $3000 and it was ours. Will have $3500 in it after repairs and it should be worth about $4500 when fixed up so I feel good about the deal.

The owner was looking wistfully at the bike after I paid him so I asked if he wanted to take one last ride. I'd adjusted the free play from the throttle and clutch, along with airing up the tires, when he returned from the ride he was in shock about how good it felt. He said he always thought it didn't handle very well, had been riding it on tires with 20psi.

Here's some pics after we brought it home, hadn't cleaned it up yet. Started working on it a bit tonight, the scrapes and scratches look better after a bit of rubbing and the bike shined up great with a good wash. Still going to order all the replacement parts to make it like new, but it's already improved. I'll post some more pics as I work on it.

Happy Ginger

Now that is just way too cool! That makes me want to make my wife learn to ride just so I can go out and find a matching companion.

Have you tried lowering it and getting her on it yet? Lucky lady, no one else is going to have a bike like her!

Congratulations!

Thanks! She's very excited, has ridden it a few miles already without lowering it. Figured out the left foot down at stop lights quickly, didn't have any problems other than trying to back it up. Loves the handling and power compared to her Vulcan 500, totally different experience.

The rear shock is already set on the second to lowest setting, I'll go ahead and knock it down to the last notch tomorrow and tinker with the front forks a bit. Plan to send the seat out to Spencer's Seat Mods for shaving and gel insert.

I would almost bet it's the only Yellow Hornet in town, haven't ever seen another 599 of any color. I was very impressed with it, just a blast to ride. Very light feeling, more compact than the 919, pegs are closer, bars are closer and narrower. Revs like crazy, decent power down low and then screams above 8000rpm.

Good stuff, can't wait to start the modding...

Right on! How tall is she 5'0-5'3"?

It's a good size for her. A little lower & it's perfect.

That little TLC is all she needs!

Great find. Congrats!

Congrats Ginger on the new ride.

Put them in the garage together. You should have a 759 in a few months.

That'd be cool, a 750cc class Hornet! You'll see us both at the Memorial Day ride, that's half the reason we bought it, couldn't have her showing up on a cruiser!

Ok, here she is after 4 hours of work this morning. Took it apart, polished all the scrapes, worked on the rear body, washed, cleaned and waxed everything, lubed and adjusted the chain, lowered the front forks by 15mm, moved the rear shock to its lowest setting. It looks are much improved, fits her better, and the handling doesn't seem to be adversely affected.

Shiny!

Great pic in front of the lake! Was the blue 919 a Canadian option or was your bike painted as well? How did you end up lowering your wife's 599, anything other then dropping the front forks and lowering the rear preset?

We rode the twisties from Indy down to Bloomington and back today, 160 mile ride, she did great on the yellow Hornet, had a big grin the first time we stopped. I'm sending the seat out for modification this week and getting all the replacement parts ordered.

I saw your post about buying the red 599 when I searched the forum for info as I was looking at this one. We share quite the number of coincidences, your wife is 5'2" and rode a Vulcan 500, then moved on to an '04 599, same as mine. You have an '02 919, same as mine. Your nickname is Mister B, something that I am frequently called as well. Freaky!

Nice Mikey, nice. Although I doubt the Olsen twins are quite that shapely since they weigh about 90 lbs each.

Yes blue was the Canadian option while the '04 599 came in black but the guy I bought it from had a $1000 custom job paint.
My wife is 5"7" (my friend's wife is 5'2" though) so no lowering needed. She loves her 599; wouldn't trade it for anything else!

You want something realy freaky, my user name is normaly "abeaud" so when I saw "sbeau".... maybe we are distant relative... yikes this is weird.

Maybe to push the envelop a bit... what did your ride before your 919... I had a '98 Yamaha Virago 750?

PS: I am afraid to read you next posting?

Ah, there's where the similarities end I guess, my last bike I had before the 919 was a '79 Suzuki GS750E. Hey, Ottawa is only 833 miles from Indy, if you both ever want to take a Sunday ride, come on down!
