Inspiration from XRMikey's bike

After having my 2004 silver 919 totalled in an accident recently, I started thinking about my next bike. I saw a pic of XRMikey's gorgeous bike and suddenly had the desire to get a red one and start modding! I don't want to make a copy of his, but would love to build something similar and add my own touches (different exhaust, mirrors, etc. left over from mine).
Here's a pic with some black added, what do you think?

A few black touches...

Not sure if I would actually go that route, but I love that red color and am trying to think of something different to add to it...

Yeah, Mikey's bike is pretty sweet. It's funny how some mods just transform a bike. Every once in a while I catch a totally stock 919 in red on the showroom floor and it just doesn't stand out at all. The mods just give it the edge it needs. The black touches you put in look good too.

We can be the WCT(west coast twins)

Your good at that. heres another pic.
Make the fork pipe(tube) gold (titanium nitride coated)
Been thinking of doing that. I wonder what it would look like?

mikey - when did you buy your bike? I just noticed we have the same year bike, with many of the same mods and we both joined WT at about the same time too. Nearly identical 919 evolutions we have!

Well not to derail mdtoney's thread, but since he's talking about emulating your bike...

I really like what you did with the tail of your bike. I did a total fender removal, CA LED board, relocated the plate under the hugger and (not surprisingly) the rear cowl and tail light is starting to show some stone scars. I'm not going to make any more changes this season, but come Winter time I may fashion or buy a fender eliminator and move that plate back out / angled out to shield stone and water spray.

I have made two other recent changes though to make the ride more comfortable: replaced the gold Ultra Lows with dark gray Renthal High Bars and replaced the Sargent seat with hooker_47's Corbin. I'm liking both much better. They don't look quite as nice or aggressive, but they are a better fit for me.

Painting this 919 canvas is really a lot of fun mdtoney!

Awesome bike. I have a red 07. I was looking to get the Sato's, but couldn't decide between Ti and Carbon, but the carbon exhaust looks pretty sweet on a red bike.

Any problems e.g. burnt body parts/singed britches/passengers w/out using the heat shields? My only hesitation about getting the carbon was that they, IMHO, do not look so nice with the heatshields...

I agree, the red looks really sharp on xrmikey and ken's bikes. the black powdercoating touches are definitely nice too.

glad to see you are healing up and ready to get another 919, mdtoney. what happened to the loser that hit you?

Heat shields are optional, just let your passenger know. I don't think the carbon fiber cans heat up as much as metal ones anyways.

Hey, that's my bike! I can attest that the carbon Sato's do not get very hot at all, just warm to the touch after riding. Can't say the same for the stainless exhaust tips, but not really in the path of contact. I didn't like the looks of the titanium clamps and heat shields, but also didn't want just the bare pipe exposed. I'm extremely happy with the black powercoated heatshields and clamps, really looks nice with the carbon fiber cans.

mdtoney,

Your silver 919 was nicely mod'd as XRMikey's and Ken's. Nice job gentlemen! Your gorgeous bikes gave me the inspiration to finally breakdown and mod my 919. The stock 919 is a nice bike but aesthetically it needs more. After dumping large amounts of $$$$ building my '05 Formula Extreme Replica 600RR, I thought my modding days were over until I saw your bikes. My wife blames you guys! I'll do similar mods but not go overboard as I did with my 600RR. The 919 will have to do without the 600RR's Marchesini wheels and carbon fiber!!

What exactly happened to your 919 to be totaled???

I think it was your 600RR that I saw a photo of on here - man, that thing was absolutely SICK!! It could have been wheeled straight out of the Team Honda truck!
I went to a dealer to look at a red 919 and I agree that it needs just a little more. The color is even more gorgeous in person, but a few mods really transform the bike.
My bike was totalled when a jackass ran a stop sign and turned into the intersection in front of me. I hit the side of his car at about 25-30 mph, then did a Superman over the car. He just backed up and drove away.
So the silver '04 has been retired and now I'm looking at a red '06 as a replacement.

Yeah the RR was a sick bike. I do miss it but it wasn't practical for the majority of my needs. I had huge fun building it and especially riding it. ---Glad you weren't hurt when your 919 was totaled.

I vote for a rebuild of 9nineteen's old bike. Just change it to a 1000RR.
Then sell it to me for track use at a Huge discount.

The candy red on the Honda is darker than the shift red. I do like it though, I actually considered buying one before I bought the FZ1. One of these days I'd like to ride one. Maybe on one of the rides I join someone will let me ride theirs, perhaps swap bikes with me for an hour or so.

My 919 Build

Between the nicely mod'd bikes as XRMikey's 919 and my previous 600RR, those are hard acts to follow. But here's my laundry list for a simple cosmetic build. . .

Asphalt Grey 919
Front Smoke Flush Mounts (three wire)
Clear Alternatives Smoke Integrated Tail Light
Renthal Silver Ultra Lows
Oberon Balck Bar End Mirrors
Rizoma Grab Handle Caps
Custom Made Fender Eliminator w/LED
Honda OEM Fly Screen w/Satin Painted Backside
OEM Center Stand
F4i Forks with F4i Fender Color Matched
954 Front and Rear Gold Calipers (fronts are bigger than 919's)
954 Radial Master Cylinder/Lever Perch (no mirror mount)
929 Clutch Lever Perch (no mirror mount)
Renthal Sprockets (rear is hard anodized gold tint)
DID ERV Gold X-Ring Chain
Rear Hugger cut off (similar to Roland Sand's 919 Brave Heart; lightens the rear's look)
Stock Cans (I like quiet on long trips, especially after my 600RR)
Galfer Wave Front Rotors
GAlfer Gen II Rear Wave Rotor
Galfer Brake Lines
Bridgestone BT-002 Track/Street Tires

I'll post photos when she's done.

You and I both know that chain is worth at least 5 more rear wheel hp! But it was only worth 3hp more on my RR.

Not if it's put on backwards. Then it's -5 RWHP.

Yo XRMikey, here's the pic with the gold fork tube coating. Sorry it took so long, I was out of town for a week. I think the gold coating would look great on your bike! I also had to make a pic with the black touches, to see if I want to go in that direction...

hey md, you could simply buy mine. I'm thinking about letting her go to move to a different bike.

My list of mods isn't huge, but I like what I've done thus far:

Akrapovic titanium exhaust w/ carbon fiber shields
Veypor digital gauge to replace factory setup
Acerbis Cyclops headlight
MX streetfighter-style bars
CRG barend mirror (have both but only using one currently)
Cleaned up rear end
Smaller signals up front
Integrated rear signals into stoplight

As I said, not a LOT of mods, but it comes together. Let me know if you might be interested. If not, I can ride her a while longer.

Here are a couple of semi recent pics.

I blacked out the fuel injection cover on my silver 02 and it looks great. I used ceramic heat spray paint. You spray it on like normal paint and then cure it in the oven. I used some rubberized black truck bed liner to do my rear hand hold but it comes off if you hit it with a boot getting ion or off the bike. Very easy to touch up though and provides great grip.

Those new red 919's are beautiful although I would be tempted to wait and get a new 675 STREET triple in 08 instead. The 919 is really due for an upgrade.

I'm in the same camp. The blacked out pieces make for a nice contrast to the red. Had some bits powdercoated last Winter and plan to do a few more this Winter, as well as having the pipes JH treated in black.
