Gauge Cluster Housing Swap

I want to ditch the chrome gauges when I get my 919 in a couple weeks. Will the black housing fit? I read in the FAQ the later models have a clock in the cluster. I just want to swap the lower housing with a black one. If that won't work I can paint it.

the clock is in the same spot as the ODO... but id does have a second button on the opposite side of the key.

I was just curious if I could swap just the lower buckets/housing whatever you want to call it.

I think they're probably the same. I can't imagine they changed the structure of the housing.

I have mine apart and can take a few pics for you if you need them.

Doesn't that chromed plastic look cheap? Never got why Honda did that change?

They look terrbile, the only other chrome on the bike is the headlight ring and I've been thinking about doing something with that too.

yea never understood why there is stainless exhaust, black rims, bla bla bla and then chrome mirrors, bars, tach, headlight rim all in teh same spot. maybe they were trying to keep the classic look of the cb model? beats me think it looks wierd

hmm lookin at my bike i think it might be time to flat black the mirrors and bottom gauge cluster housing. although the chrome doesnt stick out as much on my silver 04 than it would other colors.

Just paint it, unless you can get a black one for free.
I used rattle-can matte black on the gauge cover of both 919s I've owned and they turned out great.
I wiped them down with alcohol, then sprayed two coats of primer, and 3 coats of paint. The first one lasted two years before the bike was totalled and the current one is going on 3 years (almost daily use) with no chipping or peeling at all.

I don't know if it's a direct swap or not but the clock and second trip odo started with the '04 model. Just to give you a broader base to search

Yes you can upgrade to the later model gauges, I did. All You will need is a connector.

new connector isn't required, but it looks nice and is probably the right thing to do. I did away with the connectors and went with solder/heat shrink myself. I was also dying for a few extra MM in the bucket, since the 599 headlight is such a tight fit.

What amazed me about the stainless exhaust was how quickly it gets a nice coating of surface rust.....

Sweet! I would definitely sell my gauges if/when I find some newer 04-07 gauges. If anybody has or knows about any of them, let me know.

It even thinks about rusting I'll get it coated, after the skin on my finger tips grows back.

Jones-

I'm putting an 04 cluster on my 03 919 (so I can have the clock, basically). Which connector are you talking about? Is there a harness that makes it plug 'n' play?
