Frustrated 919 Owner

Is there anywhere I can go to share information with other motorcyclist without being sensored? (No issues here so far but I haven't really pushed it.) All I want to do is be able to post in my normal language and share funny stories. Sure, I drop the F bomb here and there, and I tend to be a little vulger, so what. I'm an adult. (and a veteran sailor!) If something bothers you close the thread!

Just this morning I posted a funny picture of motorcycle hand signals in another fourm and it was removed because it had the F word in it. Are people seriously offended by this? Really? Will you go to hell just by hearing it!? Grow up!

Sorry for the rant....

Different forums, different rules. Some are moderated a lot more heavily than others. You may not like it but when you're in someone else's house you have to respect their rules. If you don't like their rules, don't go to their house.

Understood. That is why I am asking if there and 919 related sites that are a little more "understanding". I can go hang out over at gixxer.com all day and not offend anyone but I'm not gonna learn a whole lot about Honda's!

Not that I know of...it's probably the demographic. The crotch rocket crowd is younger and their forums are pretty much a free for all. Stunt sites are the same way. Not at all what you'd find in a Goldwing or a sport touring forum Good luck in your search -- the only sites I know of that have lots of 919 owners are WT and fireblades.org, and the firebaldes naked section is pretty much dead.

There is a conscious decision to keep this board family safe and friendly.
Many members are here vs other forums for this reason.

Understood, but we are not talk about porn, and penthouse stories. We are talking about jokes the occasional swear word. You can't see a movie these days without hearing the F word so who am I really offending?

I understand what you are saying, but step back and look at this thread! Here you are pushing the subject when it has been made clear how this site is handled.

Just saying! Not trying to start anything but its something you may not see unless it was pointed out to you.

There are a lot of good people here that you can learn quite a bit from - especially about the 919. Also, as stated above, many stay involved here because this is a good, clean forum. We have some fun just keep it on the clean side of "the line".
Understanding that you can learn what you want about that great bike you have simply by not being rude and offensive. Seems quite easy to me.

Yeah.. it's a touchy subject with some. I used to work at a call center taking inbound tech support calls for major dial-up internet provider.. back when most people used dial-up, not broad band. During training they authorized us to disconnect calls if the caller used foul language again after being warned not to. So the call would go something like:

Tech: Thanks for calling (insert corp isp entity here), my name is Mike what can I do for you?

Caller: I am so pi$t off I could sh!t bricks. Your service is for sh!t and your tech support is an effing joke.

Now this scenario created a lot of discussion in training.. people would come up with examples and what not. Wanted to know how many warnings to give, if the profanity was directed at you personally etc. After about 10 minutes of all the sensitive feelers getting fully armed to disconnect for the slightest profane infraction.. making sure they have the authority.. I raise my hand and say... "What if it doesn't bother me?" The instructor didn't get what I asked.. and had to ask me what I meant. I said I don't care what kind of language people use. Words are sounds you make. All words are fairly arbitrary in the bigger picture of things in the universe and what some consider offensive I could care less about. He said if it didn't bother me I could remain on the call. I smiled and proceeded to work that job for almost 2 years. I never once disconnected a call for use of profanity or so much as warned the caller about use of language. Is was disarming to some as I am sure they were intentionally using profanity's in an attempt to get me mad or get even at MSN.. er.. the ISP. Plus, I found a way to make it fun. If a caller used the profanity directly at me.. like you effing a$$hole, blah blah. I would make sure to find a way to repeat what they said back to them. It was the only time I could actually use the profanity myself and get away with it. If my call was being monitored by a caller auditor what could they do? I was simply repeating what the caller said to verify I heard their issue correctly. It was fun.

Anyway, the point I am trying to make by telling this story is this. Words are just sounds. You choose to hear a sound as offensive or not...

No wait.. that's true but not at all my point here.

My point is I said pi$t, effing, sh!t, a$$hole in this post, and could go on all day just slightly changing the spelling or whatever so I don't actually use what would be considered in polite society as profane word, and you all knew exactly what the eff I meant. I cheated basically and still used the words I wanted. Sure it's infantile and pointless because words are just sounds and sounds can't hurt you.. but it's the world we live in and I just find a way to work within it's confines. That's the most adult thing to do!

BTW.. that last part about being an adult was my point!

My original complaint wasn't with this site. And it's not about a need to go all George Carlin in every post. But it would be nice to share something funny every once in while without it been deleted.

I'm not sure what the issue is as I have never been offended by anything in my life. Blame it on my godless heathen upbringing or my years around it in the military but it doesn't bother me. I have a wife and two kids and I don't don't sensor myself in front of them. (The wife is worse than me.)

My intention was not to debate the right or wrong or to complain about this site, it was to find a place to talk shop with other people like me. I know there out there. We're kind of like the smokers of language and good taste. Where is my profanity section? Cussing or no cussing sir? Cussing please! There is always a seat open the cussing section.

I feel you on this. I'm the manger of the server department for a local wireless company. When stuff breaks I get some pretty nasty calls and emails. Really doesn't bother me. Then again, nothing does.

You meet the nicest people on a honda - that goes for Niner owners. Purposely be nice on the site and pm the private stuff hwen you can't contain yourself - not to much to expect when on this site.

By the way.. I am drooling over Scott's mirrors. This winter is going to require some powdercoat and new apendages off the bars.

Exactly!

It would be interesting to count just how many times I use that word in day to day conversation.

I come to WT for the absolute friendliness of the site. I am located in New Zealand. For those of you who don't already know, that's a long way from most of your WT members homes and indeed, your country. I also belong to a local bike forum but in that one, if you so much as get slightly off-side with anyones views on the topic at hand e.g
"Which is the best tyre"...
and you reply with something like - Oh I hate Michelins or Bridgestones etc,,,

some of them are likely to want to start world war 3 because you run down a product they like, and all the 4 letter words under the sun come out and even though the rules are No swearing, No politics No racism etc etc etc, they seem to go at it night and day... I gave up posting in there because it just got to me how some people can get so uptight about nothing and reply in such a disgusting manner. It's all a simple matter of pride or lack of it. That forum is dead to me.

You have to stick to the rules.

In my day to day life, I can swear like a trooper as a normal part of life. It's water off a ducks back to me as I don't get offended that much by a bit of freedom of speech, even if it's aimed at me, as long as it is factual and as long as you say your piece then get on with life, rather than dwelling on it.

It's REAL NICE to come to WT and sit back and enjoy the friendly atmosphere. Part of the attraction is the lack of bad tempers and language in here...

I'm not against the use of certain words,, I just like it the way it is now...

Either way, I'll go along with it... I'm a happy chappy... I've got a good bike and a bunch of good friends to talk about it with in here...

The irritating part comes in with implicit vs. explicit. The site where my post was deleted has a smiley of smiley giving the finger. They also allow STFU and LMFO as well as F***. Soooo, what's the difference? Why is OK to to imply something but not acutally say it? The same meaning is there, so is it not equally offensive? I remember as a kid I would say "dang it!" or "Shoot!!!". The meaning was still there and I would get smacked for it!

I work with a guy who claims that whatever he says "I'm just being me".

That's all well and great. What pi$$es me off sometimes is when the "just being me" crosses the line into "I'm gonna say whatever the f I like and you're expected to accept it and if you react negatively you're the one with the problem".

IMO that's bull$hit.

The key notion to be concerned with here is "tact".

I personally have no problem with someone posting something funny that may be quite controversial. Or someone sounding off and dropping a few f bombs. Hell, I do on a daily basis.

A key value we have in common round here is mutual respect.

There are standards in place here that we all respect. Often our preferred way of expressing an opinion or ranting can be expressed with, again, tact.

Keep it real but with a certain element of class and manners.

That's all I have to say about that.

It's a fool who looks for logic in the chambers of the human heart.

Yeah...

I remember seeing some sort of debate on "morals" on a current affairs program on TV a little while ago where one side was arguing about the law and the other side about morals, with respect to a human rights court issue. Like most of these debates, this one too got carried away and neither party wanted to be the one shown up on TV, so they both went off the deep end and shortly before I switched the channel, I heard one of them quoting (I think it was from the "morals" side of the debate), "If it happens - it's normal"....

Now, that had an impact on me and I thought there was a lot of truth in that statement,, BUT,, in the end it boils down to where your boundaries cross over into other peoples boundaries,, eg...

If I decided to hit somebody across the head because I simply felt like it, he can't take me to court for assault because there was nothing abnormal or anti about the action, because it was "Normal", but what about the guy with the hole in his head and brains all over the gound??? And what about protecting everyone else, including myself, against such an act from any other normal guy, in the future.

In this case, "normal" can be taken in many ways, because bascially the statement IS correct but only to the point where it infringes upon somebody elses right to be left alone, or even be "normal" too... "Normal" can hide a multitude if sins...

I am not basing this argument on any issue in here but I know what you mean...

Sometimes discretion really is the better part of valour...
