Found a source for Kerosene

One quart size Kerosene in the camping section at Walmart. Blue plastic bottle from Coleman. Perfect for chain cleaning. If you live in a place like me, there's no pumps around for Kerosene. And this quart was less then 5 bucks. Just thought I'd share.

Stupid question, but does anyone know if smokeless lamp oil can be used instead of kerosene? Are they the same thing?

I believe lamp oil is simply more refined kero. If I were going to use it I'd try to find some of the colorless and scentless variety.

edit: more refined to keep the soot level lower

Mineral spirits (walmart paint section) is as good a chain cleaner as kerosene, not as flamable, easier on your chain seals, and less harsh on your skin and lungs. I usually pour a half pint of mineral oil into the mineral spirits and my chain comes out nice and soft, I mean it is less harsh to the X-rings.
