Decal removal

hey guys, I did a search, and came up empty. Im wondering if anyone here has removed the honda decal from the 919 tank. I have a spare tail that I started playing with, and the "919" decal doesnt come off like i thought it would. the top layer peels off real easy, revealing the glue used to hold it in place. it doesnt want peel off, before you can dig up enough to grab onto, it chips/flakes away. Im wondering if the gas tank is the same way? I tried goo gone on the tail glue, and it seemed to just piss the sticker off. any tips on this? (other than "leave it alone"!) lol

Only thing that worked for me was acetone and a razor... but I was going to repaint. Plastic razor and and actual adhesive remover from Home Depot should work. Visit the paint dept. for these items.

yeah.. Ive got half of the paint dept. downstairs, I just wasnt sure if there was one specific chemical that melted this thing away. when you were getting into the tank decal, did you notice if it was the same 'foil on top of glue" type decal as the tail, or was it a different kind?

Find a auto paint shop near you. They will sell a spray bottle with decal/sticker remover in it. It works wonders. I never used it on my bike, but I did use it on some vehicles.

Press Any Key To Continue.

AutoZone has bumper sticker remover... Good stuff w/o paint damage. My tank was the '07 red and decals were under the clear.

I bought my 919 from a guy who worked restoring boats. I have no decals whatsoever and she frickin' looks fabulous straight matte black (2003). Yeah, he took all the pieces down and repainted, then clear coated over them. I know nothing about body work, but my guess this is one of those areas that is unforgiving with respect to shortcuts if you want it to look right.

I've always found it helps to warm the decal with a hair dryer or hot air gun. Seems to lift most of the adhesive with it. If there's any left I clean it off with Wurth brake cleaner as it's rubber friendly & doesn't hurt the paint.

I ended up leaving them on. Ive got a spare tail section, and plan on shaving the grab handle holes, so Ill debadge that one when the time comes. For the time being, theyre so unobtrusive, they kind of grew on me.

although, i DID have a guy ask me the other day.. "whats the 919 stand for?" For a second, I thought he was messing with me, but then I realized.. not everyone is a car/bike guy.. I guess debagding would avoid such questions in the future!

That's why I leave it on, I LOVE to tell people about my bike. Especially the guy that I whooped on the local highway on his GSXR (either 600 or 750, not sure which). He caught up to me at the next light and, with a surprised look on his face, asked 'WTF is that thing?!'.

I just pointed to the 919 decal and said "Honda 919". Then took off, ...
