Deal's Gap Spring Ride

I got in touch with "Two Wheel Inn" in Robbinsville and inquired about room availability for next May. Below is a response to my email inquiry.

I'd suggest the week before Memorial Day weekend. There should be less traffic.

You can check out their website here:

Here is their epmail response:

Hi Roger. Sorry for the delay in responding to your email. Our internet/phones were down. We would love to host your group next May. We have 17 rooms and a one-bedroom apartment that can sleep 6 (queen bed, queen sleeper sofa, and up to 3 rollaway beds). All of our non-smoking rooms have an attached garage for your bike(s), a small refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker, direcTV, free wireless access, chairs and a small table for outside of your room. We have guest laundry facilities, covered pavilion, picnic tables, bbq grills, and a fire pit. We also have a place to wash your bikes and we supply rags. At this time, all of our rooms are available for May 2010, however, if you book this year (before December 31) you will receive this year's rates. Our rates after December 31 will increase by $5.00. If your group reserves the whole motel, we will offer a discount. As far as notice, as soon as you are set on your date, please call for availability. May gets pretty busy depending on what date you choose, especially if you will be booking a lot of rooms. We are close to the Tail of the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, Hellbender 28 and many other roads. Restaurants are about 2-1/2 miles from us in Robbinsville, NC. If you have any other questions, please call me at 828-479-4248. Thank you for your inquiry and we look forward to accommodating your group in May.

what's that?.... do I smell a "WT 2010 big spring event" cookin' ?

I've been to Knoxville, TN twice in my life (as far East as I've ever gone)
and both times wished I could've been in the area on a bike trip instead of traveling by bus.

Consider me highly interested but with a long road ahead of me for planning & convincing the wife to let me go...

Abba Zaba, you my only friend.

I'd go just to hang with the riders.

Tn is a great central location for a Swarm. Before Memorial day is always a big plus.

I sent my wife an email entitled "May 2010". Here's how it's goin' so far...

Spoiler:

ME: Picture it... the absolute thickest forest as you can imagine stretching further than they eye can see, and us riding through it on the 9er on twisty roads that rival (and may even surpass) the route we took from Golden to Fort Collins.

Just putting it out there,
think about it.

Travel Map

:^)

WIFE: You are silly. And, yes, I can picture it.

ME: ...sooo

yer sayin' there's a chance?? :-)

WIFE: Yes, there's a chance provided vacation time/finances work out.

ME: I think I just pee'd a little :^D

WIFE: You sound like Brian on Family Guy...

I'm down. I live 2.5 hours from the Dragon. I usually stay at the Philip's Motel in Robbinsville when I go, but they sold if to some new people so I don't know the info anymore. I've camped at the IHL as well.

i'm intrested! dad and i just got back on fri morning
https://wristtwisters.com/touring-jou...deals-gap.html
the people at the "two wheel inn" were great. the bike garages are cool, we fit my 9er and dad's st1300 in 1 garage. it was snug but they fit fine.you could easily put 2 9er's in one.
the rooms were nice with big bathrooms ,a microwave, fridge, coffee maker and directv.
they are 2.5 miles from town with gas, drug store, and some nice eateries.the ride to the dragon is about 15 mins, the cherohala skyway ends right in town as does "hellbender" nc28.

if we do this i'm loading the bikes in the truck because it's 710 miles and i'm still sore but i'd love to do it again!

i could've spent a whole day just riding "the dragon"

the dragon is paved better than ANY rode in nj

Was there 2 weeks ago on the Motard. Rode there from my friends place near Oak Ridge, to Vonore, took TN-360 south to Tellico, Cherohala Skyway/TN-165/NC-143 thru Robbinsville to NC-28 (Hellbender) and up to Deals Gap, hit the Dragon and rode on US-129 thru Fontana and Maryville and followed the GPS back to Oak Ridge. One of the best days of my life I tell you.

From what little I've seen and a lot of what I've heard, weekends are not the best time to be on the Dragon.

Some of us from Honda599.com are putting together a Hornet ride in the spring. We're shooting for May 1st and 2nd 2010. Granted we've just started planning it, but here's the link to the site where is it being planned...

Hornets swarm the Smoky Mountans - Honda 599 Forum

Would be awesome to have a huge swarm take over the smokies!

I think we ought to just crash the 599 party and go with their date.

I take 129 fairly slow. I don't like that stretch of road. Much prefer all the others.

I like the sound of this trip... I'll see if I can get it by the finance minister and through the appropriation committee.

Glad to see more interest filtering in

I'm about 90% sure I'll be able to make it out.
Jill is on board, didn't take much arm twisting after our trip to Colorado this spring.
We'll be trailering out there as it's like a 15 hour drive from here.

Soooo, are we considering the Two Wheel Inn as the OP indicates?
I'm thinking we should try to set a date & get a place booked ASAP.

Any input on dates?

Since May 1-7 has already been spoken for for vacation from work, do we want to try to focus on one of the weekends at either end of that week?

I'm working with a couple guys from Honda599.com on getting some locations scouted for camping, meeting that type thing. I hope no one takes offence to this statement, for it is not meant to be one of offence, but we (599.com) would like to keep this as much a douchebag free weekend as possible. So far from the response here I don't see that being a problem. Just wanted anyone that plans to bring an attitude to just stay home, or ride somewhere else. Thanks!!! I'll keep you post as more we gather more intel.

cb919er: I like you already

I'll be riding 2-up when we hit the twisties, so I hope to be surrounded by ego-free, non-douchebags as well.

Of all the people who have shown interest so far, I can already speak for Justin & Chris - definitely NOT douchebags.
Brian & Billy I haven't had the opportunity to personally interact with yet, but I'm certainly looking forward to the day we meet
... and I highly doubt that they're douchebags either

i am curious as to the definition of "douchebag" ........... but i personally don't feel like getting tickets or scratching up my pretty bike sooooo i don't think i will be pulling any shenanigans... hope that qualifies me as "not a douchebag"....

Well I'd like to return the favor, and vote to put Doug in the Non-D-bag category also. All the guys I have met from WT fall into that category. And having talked to Brian, I am pretty sure he can hold his own in Non Douchebaggery also. In fact this is a pretty non-douchey site overall. There's always exception of course

I don't want to scratch mine up either, or get any tickets, so I think we'll get along fine... Seems you fit in the "not a Douchebag" category.

As long as the ego is left at home, and everyone realizes that we're just there to ride, have a good time, swap some stories, take in the fellowship of some fellow naked riders, then I think we'll be cool. I'm sure some of the group riding my be a little "spirited" but I'm a extreme believer ride you're own ride. But it usually seems there is always someone that wants to show his/her ass and makes the whole group look bad. This is going to be the first "Hornets Swarm the Smokies" ride, don't want to get a bad rep up there...

I'm not sure about that early in the year, but Tennessee Hwy Patrol already have a hard-on for sportbikes up there, so drawing a little bad attention to ourselves as possible would be in everyone's best interest
