buyin a new one

For those who don't know my bike was stolen last week. Insurance is doing their processing on their end now and I'm window shopping for my next one.

I'm up in the air

Choices are:
Used S3 with 10k miles
New Lightning XB12S
(can't find any 919 in the area cause I know I'll hear it at least once)

From what i understand where one excels in power the other equally excels in handling but both bikes are roughly the same.

I have my opinions and I want yours.

Well, Even though I Like HD, if it was a choice between the current gen S3 or the BuellXB12, unless uniqueness is your main criteria the S3 would be my choice. Now if were talking the new 1125cr I may change my mind if the price were the same.

You want exotic or practical?

Exotic = Aprilia Tuono
Practical = Yamaha FZ1

I wanted a Buell. I love the concept. However, the first three (in three different dealerships) wouldn't start. The fourth did, and it was a great ride (albeit with a really hot right leg...). First, I couldn't overcome the fact that 3 out of 4 new bikes wouldn't start. Second, I asked about extended warranties, and they wanted a fortune for one (in comparison to Kawi). This is a really good indicator of what they think is going to occur. In contrast, I don't find the S3 as cool, but still really cool. I have ridden several, and they are also a great ride (maybe the best low speed wheelie bike ever). Plus, all of them ran well.

Good Luck!!!

Note, the extended warranty for my 919 was 1/4 what they wanted for the Buell warranty, both warranties through the parent company.

Shop around a bit. The shops in my area are selling 1-2 year old new FZ1's cheap (under 8k asking price).

Buell XB12S. I like that bike a lot.

Speed Triple, I like it...just haven't rode one, yet. The US FZ1 is so ugly.

Hmmm, interesting what appeals to different folks. Before I bought my 919, the only other contenders were the S3 and FZ1. The final choice came down to bang for bucks. By the time its finished, my '07 niner with just 1200 kilometers on the clock will have cost me around $7000 (thats New Zealand dollars, about 55c US). The S3 was near $15000 and the FZ1 about $14000, both used with around 10k km.

Buell's have had HEAPS of recalls since they first came out. I reckon the S3!

Let me defend Buell here - most " recalls" have been due to A - owners suggestions for things to have changed B - results of studies of all the new ideas they did with the Xb series. There has been one recall and one service update on my 2003 XB9R - recall = headlight backing peeling off housing , service update = oil cooler line spacer/leaking.

The current Xb's are great bikes, asl long as your not looking for 1 million HP . If you want a really sweet handling bike that there are 15 thousand of every where, its for you -

But the same can be said for the Speed 3 - The 1050 is a really ,really great bike. I havent ridden the 955 version, so I really cant testify to it. Im not sure that Id want to put out all that cash for one with 10k miles.

Of your two choices, Id got with the Buell - or find a Tuono !
