Any FZ1 riders?

Since this isnt' a 919 forum even though it often feels like it--any FZ1 owners here?

I have been thinking about getting a second bike to compliment my 919 (I can't come close to affording it but the thinking is free). I was originally thinking FJR but thought a 05 or earlier FZ1 decked out with a full fairing & hard bags may be the ticket instead--I am going for a sport tourer here. Anyone know of any FZ1s set up with lowers & hardbags to see what that would be like?

I used to have an '02 FZ1. Now I have a 919, which I prefer.

Despite the fact that I prefer the 919, the FZ1 is a great bike. I just could not ever get it set up the way I wanted it. To make a great touring bike, I would like a good windshield. Because the 1/2 fairing is so low, it takes a really tall windshield to provide any decent coverage. I never could get one to work right for touring. Despite lacking a decent windshield, many people use the FZ1 for touring anyway.

If you want to see pics of various FZ1's, or learn more about them, you might want to sign up at http://www.yamahafz1oa.com/.

I rode an FZ1 for a season. Nice bike. But I was never really comfortable with it. I spent some time, miles, and money trying to make it fit me -- Corbin Beetle Babs and a Corbin seat. I finally decided that it just wasn't the bike for me and moved on. But it has a lot of spirit and was fun to ride. It just didn't fit me well. The 06's are getting terrible reviews from owners and the rags. Really bad low end hesitation from a poorly done EFI remapping. The new 05's were snatched up pretty quick once the word was out that the 06's had this problem.

Right before I decided to pick up a 919, I had the FZ6 on my short list. Took it for a test ride too. Really neat little bike. Nice price too. In the end I went with the 919 due to smoothness, quality, Honda name, and the larger engine.

A couple of our members should be able to shed a little light on this thread. Paging wArDoG and 05FZ1

05FZ1's fizzy, one sweet bike with the lowers.

Just bought an 06 FZ1 and am now selling the 9'er. The FZ just fits me better. After riding them back to back for a few weeks I find the 919 cramping me in the knees although it does out pull the FZ. I'm working on my ad for the 2006 919 as we speak. I like the 919 but the FZ1, again, just fits me better and does what I need it to do just fine. Again no knock on the 9'er as it's bomb proof and reliable as well as being able to kick ass but I can only have one bike until I get rich and independently wealthy.

When I bought my 919 the FZ1 was the only other alternative in my eyes. They both have their advantages but the 1 thing that tilted me just a tad further was the exhaust. As a personal preference I don't like the fat gaudy exhaust that stick out on the sides of bikes. I love the look of the 919 or Interceptor ones.

I have a first gen FZ1 and use it for one up sport touring. Longest trip I've done on it was 3500+/- miles.

IMO the FZ's biggest downfall as a sport tourer is it's lack of protection. You can put the full fairing on and get a bigger wind screen and it will help but it will never give you the protection a true ST machine will.

The only other pitfall I can think of is the chain drive (not a big deal to me)

Other than that you really can't go wrong with the bike. It does everything well. It's very solid and is a great all 'rounder.

There are lots of different setups for bags. I prefer the Ventura system.

Check out the FZ1OA. Tons of info on STing with the FZ.

I've had my 2005 919 for that last year and while I like the bike, it never quite fit me. I did take the trip from Washington DC to Deal's Gap on it (2000 miles round trip). However, I just bought a 2003 FZ1 (pictured below) and took it on a 1000+ mile trip (definitely alot better tourer than the 919). The windsheild is not the stock one, but somewhere in between the stock one and a touring one. Also, I got a corbin seat. I'm currently looking for some hardbags and still trying to make up my mind.

A new FZ1 replaced my 1986 FJ1200 and took me on a little 3800 mile camping trip to Colorado last month. I came back ready to go again.

I just sold my 05 FZ1, and bought a 06 919. The 919 was my second choice when I bought the FZ1.
I don't know if it will get better when I ride it more or not, but the seat kills me, and it doesn't take very long. I rode my FZ1 on a 3000 mile trip this year, and many times to Deals Gap, and it didn't bother me like the 919. Other than that I love the 919, but it's a big issue because I ride a lot. I don't know if a Corbin seat will help or not. It's a lot of money if it doesn't.

Corbins are the best. I had one on my 500 and never had a sore ass. I'm thinking about trying Sargent this time just to try something different.

The Corbin is more heavy, but very good quality.

jnor, I bought an AirHawk for 2005 919 which seemed to help alot (600 miles in one day). It's half the price or less compared to a Corbin. I may be selling mine if it doesn't sell with 919.
