919 Sargent seat posibility

OK guys, your replies and interest prompted me to call back the product development guy at Sargent. Here's the scoop.

They are going to design and reproduce two seats for the 919 for two people to assess modification requirements. Me and this other person are both required to send in our stock seats next month. If all goes well with our seats, they will move forward with a production modification process for a custom 919 seat upgrade (widen the seating area, level the riding platform and installing supercell foam in the seating areas). This would be a November timeframe. There is no price at this time. If they do this, 919 customers will have the options of their Carbon/FX or Griptex materials and piping colors. They are sending some colors to me to match against the red, and they will look at the other 919 colors. I'll keep you posted on this as it unfolds, but not much will happen for about a month or so.

This would probably not be a group buy thing since it would require each owner to send in their stock seat. I'm on the hunt for a stock seat on eBay so that maybe we can pass around a loaner and reduce down time (not that it matters to me since I have a Winter period here).

Back on Motorush there were quite a few niners that had Sargent seats. You can design it however you want. panels, textures, ect, ect.

Price back then was around $185

Maybe they were one-offs? Not sure, but this R&D guy said it's a new project for them.

Not new at all. They've made them for numerous customers at home here in the good ole USA and for a boat load of Hornet riders abroad.

Very cool! Looks really nice. If it's not new then I'm very lucky since they are doing this for me for next to nothing as their 'new project guineau pig'!

Nice job on the "discount"

Make sure you post up some pics when it's done.

Here is my Sargent seat:

I didn't have the foam altered in anyway because I rode long enough of the stock seat that my candy a$$ got used to the feel. My main complaint was the waxy vinyl that is on the stocker. Makes it hard to slide around on the seat for whatever reason. I went with a similar design as others have used with 1 major difference, I did not have any piping sewed in. They did what is called a "Top stitch" which I think looks way less dated and "Old Man". I just think piping is super dorky.

2 more pics:

I have to agree that the Top Stitch looks SO much better than having piping. I had given an aftermarket seat some thought, but the ones I saw all had piping around them and I was totally turned off. I may reconsider!
I'm very interested to see how Ken's project with Sargent works out. I've never ridden with supercell foam, but I'm hoping to hear good things from this.

Wow, I agree that the cleaner look of the top stitch is nicer looking! Very clean! Very sharp, Moto!

I've already received a follow up from Sargent confirming our agreement on this project. I've also inquired about 919 custom work they've done in the past and how this may be different. I'll be sure to let you all know what I hear back and when this will move forward. Thanks a lot for the feedback.

I would like to see a Sargent seat design with that solo look ala Corbin gunfighter.

I think it's great that they are doing this. I want one!

I agree with the others who've said the top stitch looks better than piping.

Hey Moto, how is the firmness of the seat? Firmer than stock?

I assume you are asking me.. there are several users with "moto" in there username. It's more specific to use 'Cycho' or my full username. Or if you want to join my church you can call me 'Reverend'.

Anyway, as I said before. I didn't have any foam or padding work done to the stock seat pan. So aside from the smoother, more slidable vinyl.. the seat feels the same under my bum. The stock Vinyl seems more stretchy.. so if you can feel the pea under your mattress then you may notice a difference.. but I can't.

i was hoping they'd do a smuggler version...the 9r begs for it

i doubt corbin will...especially w/ the method used to create the seat pan (the same method for all motorcycles...cruisers/sportbikes...this massive/heavy piece)

find a local trim shop and have them hook u up

sargent goes w/ different thickness/types of foam compared to corbin...i'd like to see sargent beef it up a bit...takes longer to break in but should work better for the long haul

FYI: i have 2 stock seats sittin in the shop, pm me if u want one for shippin around or whatever

btw, i do hate the visual on the corbin as well, but it is comfortable on long rides

Well.. don't laugh at me. It was on an '02 pan with only two hooks and my '03 has the 4 hooks... then to push me over the edge my cat jumped over from the car to the bike in the garage and went sliding right off.. well not before snagging a claw in the seat.

That hurts Kinda cool people like that seat design.

Always lurking...just havn't been doing a ton of riding lately Had thoughts of getting the ST1300 in the next couple of years....keeping the 919 of course! I don't think I could ever get rid of this bike...the lines on this bike are timeless!

My guess is the dealer I bought my '03 from new in May of '04, accidentally switched the seat with an '04 they had on the floor. Mine had been there a full year already just waiting for me. Anyway.. 4 hooks are better than 2 when ya need 'em.. for sure!

I have been called worse! My buddy refers to my 9er as "The Trailer Queen". This is of course because it looks pretty and new even at 21,000 miles, not because I trailer it around. Besides.. I told you not to laugh. I could fully live with the hole.. it's tiny. But since I had an offer on it and I have a spare.. and mostly I want 4 hooks back. So there! :tt2:

Here's a question about those hooks - I have them but have never used them for fear of the rear hooks rubbing the paint off the tail. I flipped them out once to try, but when I put weight on the seat, it seemed like they would rub. Yes? No? Maybe?

Mine have never rubbed. That said.. I have the Asphalt color and scratches don't real show up. The tail section almost looks like it was molded that color from the factory and not actually painted. Same with side covers and front fender. Can't say for sure unless I sanded on them. Also, I only flip the hooks out to use them.. which means there is a bungee net pulling them up and away from the plastic tail until I am done with them and then I put them away.

Oh Oh, I want this one!

I've only known two people that had a seat from Top Saddelry and neither was thrilled with them. The happiest butts in the land are the ones riding on Rusell Mayer Day Long seats, followed by Sargent and Corbin. At least, that was the consensus in the touring crowd.
