Okay, so who's going out riding today? I decided to brave the cold and ride to work. Yikes! Of course, I only had to ride for 7 miles but my fingers are still numb. So the question is am I really hard core or just Stoooopid????
Chilly Chilly! Well I did ride yesterday in NJ where it varied between low 40's to mid upper 30's. I decided to go for a ride at around 3:30 or so in the afternoon because I was bored sitting in the house. I put on around 50 miles or so. I road some local roads and hopped on rt 33 and rt 133 to see how 70+ would feel.
The only thing that got a bit chilly was my fingertips and my chin and nose. I knew from experience that riding in the low 50's that my ears get cold so I wore a baklava which made my helmet fit pretty tight and annoyed my ears a bit. I also had to be very careful about fogging and noticed that the little lever on my Shoei rf1000 was not working like it used to to open the visor a teeny bit. I'll figure out how to adjust or tighten that.
I do not have any heated gear so I wore a Paradox undershirt (costco $20), a long sleeve pearl izumi biker shirt and castelli jacket under an old leather jacket. I had a pair of cabella's deerskin insulated gloves with a cheap pair of liners. My body core was toasty.
I wore my usual bohn leg armor under my draggin kevlar jeans and I decided to wear a lined but uninsulated cabella's overpants knowing without at 48 degrees the top of my legs got slightly chilly. I had on my usual chippewa boots and a pair of wool socks. My feet were toasty warm as well as my legs.
I am considering venturing out today after lunch and some house chores as it is sunny bright 29 degrees and "feels like" 15 according to weather.com.
Oh and BTW, I saw not one bike on the road yesterday. I did fill up with 91 instead of my usual 93 and I may try the next grade down to see how that goes as well. Lastly my last tank I "only" got around 40 mpg to which I attribute riding two up with my nephew and riding in the lower gears rather than short shifting so I could hear the 919 roar!
PS. All in all I enjoyed the ride a lot. The cool air was invigorating and I had a great ride. The only pita was getting the snaps closed on the sleeves of my jacket with the gloves and the over-pants have a ton of velcro on the sides to deal with.
I went for about a 50 mile jaunt yesterday. The shoulders were covered with snow from the dusting we got the previous night but the road wasn't too bad. For some reason all the cagers were looking at me funny. it's supposed to be a little warmer today so I may try and get closer to a 100 miles on the bike today.
