'06 to '04 Bodywork?

Hi 919ers,

I crashed my '04. Tank is history, as is rear cowl. Surprisingly light damage overall, rides fine. I'm thinking about replacing the bodywork with '06 red. I like that color, and if I'm spending all that cash why not give her a makeover? Obvious question:

Will it all fit together? The bodywork looks the same year to year, but I know there have been some subtle changes to the bike. Wondering if anyone has swapped out in this fashion.

btw, any other post-crash advice you guys have would be welcome. I inspected the big metal for cracks, and the motor mounts. Nothing visual, and she's stable as brand new on the road. Haven't gone over 60 due to the interesting new ergonomics.

If any of you guys are Hornet's Nesters you might have seen my post there as well. Same f'ed up 9er!

Cheers, and happy new year to all.

I like my silver, but I'd go red in a heartheat.

i think the tanks are the first things to go. they stick out like a sore thumb.
i bought my 05 as a "scratch n dent" and repaired it with 06 parts no problem
i'm sure you can do the same.
glad it's just the bike and you're alright

Body work should fit no prob, Biggest changes to the 9er over the years were the adjustable forks added in 04, and different colors

I used my dented tank as an excuse to paint my bike something other than stock. I purchased a used tank, perfect condition, off ebay for $115 shipped and took it to a painter on island. He charged me $500 for the two-tone paint job on the tank, front fender, seat cowl, grab handle, caps & both side covers. If not, that red does look pretty sharp so good luck w/ your venture.

Ewa Beach Huh? I lived in Pearl City when the wife and I were stationed @ P.H. back in the eighties. I didn't ride then, but had a purple bug!

I plan to die young, as late as possible.

Thanks Mike. Yea Oahu has changed a lot since then, at least from what I've seen in pictures and from what the locals say. The Ewa Plains are booming now a days, downside is that traffic in and out is ridiculous. [/threadjack]

and switching to 4 under seat hooks from 2 (think that was 04 as well.. I'm on the hunt for an 04 or later seat to buy and send to sargent to replace the seat on my 02 without having to stop riding for a month to do it)

Thanks for the WORD, people. Ramrod, I like the look of your paint. Not sure LA would be so reasonable, cost-wise. My Harley friends are the only ones I've known who get custom paint, and they usually pay a lot more. Excellent food for thought, though, thanks for that.

I did peruse Ebay. A junkyard is/was selling a dented '06 tank for $200, which is more than I would pay for dented ****e. There were a lot of niner parts, more than I would have expected! Thanks for the steer on that, too.

Renthals w/aftermarket bar ends and mirrors look gettable at cheaper than OEM replacement prices. Hmmm. Since I trashed one of the bar ends and mirror I might go that way, too. No way am I grinding down the nubs on the controls.

Has anyone drilled a Renthal bar for the placement nubs? Does it compromise the strength?

Lots of people have, just make sure you get em in the right spot, dont worry about it compromising the bars
