I had a decent amount of seat time on the 04. TO date it is the smoothest running bike I have ridden. Any complaints about low end torque can easily be made up with a little clutchslip.

I also think it is one of the best looking bikes ever built. I am just not a fan of undertail exhaust.

All I can add to what f4i guy said is the fact that I own an 08 FZ1 and I love it. I too think it's the smoothest bike I've owned and ridden and the R1 would simply be a more race built version of what I have.

Doubt you'll be disappointed

Just found this.
05 R1 TPS Recall
Just in case any R1 owners are around there has been a recall for 2005 R1 for a replacement TPS.
Most owners have been sent a letter from Yamaha but if you haven't check out this link for some more detail.

well... around here they do... at least the owners do... they have a habit of being ridden by wankers who wear tshirts and sandals with helmet and gloves on....while sporting 2" wide chicken strips..

decided not to get it. it is sweet though. 05 has 6k miles asking $5900. looks like it belongs to a parking lot pimp rather than a rider. i'm just not into pianos that much. if it were a cbr or gsxr it might be different. still struggling with the keep the 919 or upgrade question.

it's a possibility. it would pay for itself in two years or less in insurance savings alone. for just about any type of super sport i'd be looking at about $1200 a year in premiums versus the $210 a year i'm paying for the 919.

i wanna see some reviews from the first owners before i get mine. i can see how a turbo would be great for the straight line action, but i'm a twisties kind of guy. i'm really curious as to how the power delivery is gonna be coming out of corners.
