Server upgrades

Sometime next week I'm going to upgrade the versions of Apache to Apache 2.0 and PHP on the server to PHP 5.2.5 with APC and MySQL 5.0.51

These upgrades will lay the groundwork for an upgrade to VB 3.7.0 with a more efficient Apache, SQl and PHP and should optimize performance.

This upgrade should be painless and transparent.

The only part I understood is painless and transparent. Carry on.

I think the upgrade messed my Casino account up. I only have like $200.00.

Oh wait, you haven't done it yet. Sorry, please carry on. Nothing to see here.

Apache 2.0 is supposed to be significantly faster than 1.X.X but the modules thing is confusing to me. Plus vbulletin 3.7.0 runs best on upgraded PHP & SQL. The VB 3.7 has some neat features I want to play with but they're advising the server software upgrades prior.

What's confusing you about the modules?

they offer a bunch of them and I'm having to read through what each one is, then understand what I might need them for and compare their functions to existing functions on the older version.

I'm not sure which ones I need, if any of them. The default upgrade might work just fine then I wouldn't have to think much.

Figuring out which mods you need and which you don't can be fun. It could be simple to figure out, depending on what other sites run on this server. VB should be able to tell you which mod's you do need. Cut out any that you don't as the more modules you load, the more security risk there is. Also I believe it will increase the footprint of each child that forks, but I could be wrong. I'd test it but I've left my lab unplugged in the corner for months as punishment, and I'm still mad at it (hardware failures, grrr!)

there is a bare minimum list of modules and in fact a barebones config file that should be used to 'make' apache 2.0, life will be easier

there is much cool stuff and some things are easier once you transition but as usual, exploitations abound

tarballs make the word go 'round

i just play w/ this stuff for fun these days...reminds me of simpler times

hollar if u want

I was about to say are you a masochist or something? But then I remember how tame Apache is compared to other stuff (Sendhell, I mean uhh Sendmail anyone?)
