Google Chrome

Google has released their new web browser, Google Chrome. It's very clean, very fast, and has been built from the ground up based on what people do with browsers nowadays, not what they were created for nearly 20 years ago.

Learn more about Google Chrome here.

I've been using for most of the afternoon and am impressed, particularly for something in a v1 release. If you want to give it a try, here's the link.

Anyone else test driving it?

Agreed.

And with each tab running as its own process, a single tab can't crash the entire browser. So far, I haven't found any problems. It's not as customizable as Firefox or IE but it definitely parses pages faster, particularly those with heave doses of JavaScript.

Opera was my introuduction to tabbed browsing, impressed me back then with lots of features but turned me off with less than perfect performance. Overall it was a good option in its day.

I'll have to check out G's new offering and see what it's all about.

They have the IE 8 beta out now, too. I tried that out last night...seems to be slower than 7? I was underwhelmed.

The only problem i've had with opera is that very few website won't work b/c they want firefox or IE, which I have for that case. While my favorite freature is mouse gestures, I love being able to go forward, back, close, and open the new pages with minimal effort. It drives me nuts on my work computer not being able to do it.

I like chrome so far. I don't like the fact that all of the words are something like an 8 sized font, but I may need to tweak the settings a bit.

I also dig that it has an automatic spell checker. Thanks for the link Ken.

Edit: if anyone that is using the Chrome browser would please keep an eye out for anything out of the ordinary and please take a screen shot. Send it to me, jetblast10 or any moderator with an explanation of the anomaly. Many thanks.

Not sure about everyone else Ridge, but I find my top nav buttons on WT are all different with Chrome, and I don't seem to have any way to get to my Control Panel any longer.

I'm seeing this on all the vBulletin sites, Ridge. Quick Links are gone and unless the User CP is in the Top Nav (outside of Quick Links), you lose it. And for some reason, you pick up a 'Mark Forums Read' button.

So here I am at work the next day and I probably have about 4 hours of experience with Chrome now. No problems so far.

I'm listening to a local radio station's streaming audio. I figured out how to place the Home Page button on the main menu. I love how it shows you your most frequently visited sites when you open a new tab.

I'm really blown away at how fast this browser is with AJAX and JavaScript pages. Our company develops web-based clinical decision support tools for physicians that are very heavy with images and JavaScript. They perform better with Chrome than the other three browsers we support, Firefox, IE, and Safari.

I'm liking it!

just got it loaded and giving it a lookover.

It has some vbulletin interaction issues. It doesn't like the navbar, it likes to arrange thread tool functions at the bottom of the page. These are not issues with vbulletin, they're Chrome issues. Aside from that Chrome appears to be running fine and fast.

I find the same exact problems with Safari. It rearranges some top nav elements like removing Quick Links and adding Mark Forums Read. It may be an issue with vBulletin skins though since I don't see this behavior with the default vBulletin interface.

Read my lips... Not gonna do it!

As PC challanged as I am, everytime I try something new, I screw it up, I like technology but despise the learning of new look & feel.

I'm staying with my ole trusty IE6 for work & IE7 for home... hackers be dammed!!!

Could be, once you begin custom coding the skins and links anything is possible. Not going to take on a full recode project quite yet, looks like the dropdown button is the only thing affected, can't get to the Control Panel in Chrome. Let's keep track of what's affected and I'll see if simple rearrangements could work.

Chrome's speed is impressive.

Just getting comfortable with Firefox however might have to give Chrome a try.
Google already has me in her clutches with gmail, Page Creator, and Google Docs.

This is the main reason I'm still using it. The developers wanted to make the browser invisible and I think they are succeeding.

I just wish I didn't need administrator rights to install Adobe Flash player on it.

I can use Google Chrome on my work PC, but not Firefox. Strange, but true. If I want to see any embedded you tube videos on here, it asks me to install the adobe flash software. I already have it installed and running fine on my PC, but it will not work in Chrome... weird.

I have a list of other minor infractions that Chrome seems to have with Vbulletin. Attaching images does not seem to work for me in Chrome and if I grab and hold the slide bar on the right, it shoots me to the bottom of the page if I scroll up too fast.

That's where I noticed the issue. I can see the GIF image just fine, but the movie will not play. It is very annoying since Adobe Flash is used on so many sites that I frequent.

That's what I don't understand. I have Adobe flash installed on this machine. It works in IE7 just fine. I don't see why it is asking me to install it again.

I'm pretty sure the Flash plug-in is browser specific. So the having the plug-in installed for IE doesn't mean it will work with other browsers.

Ah, that makes more sense now. Well, that sucks! I don't have full admin rights on this machine, just super-user, if that makes sense. I can do everything short of d/l and installing executable programs.
