Post some photos, more information, and location, and price. Otherwise it's just a cool story, bro.

That's a local repaint. Honda did not offer the 919 in the US in 2002 in anything but asphalt black and you could not 'order' another color as Honda would not import it. The color doesn't match the later Candy Glory Red and the decals don't match the US or non-US Honda offerings, so it's not a parts swap with a rest-of-world bike.

It looks to be at least a decent repaint from what I can see, but it's not a "Honda custom order" - the closest that could be is that the dealer had a shop repaint the bike before or after purchase and put new 2002 decals on it. I've heard of this before, some dealers didn't think asphalt black would sell well.

Edit: The fact that it's a repaint shouldn't hurt resale at this point. The 919s are getting old and they are a cult classic at this point, but they haven't gotten so collectable that people won't use them as daily riders or that repainting it a non-factory color will rape your resale value. Just don't claim it's a custom order when it isn't - Honda USA didn't *do* custom orders between 1980 and 2010.

Upon further reflection, I've something else to add. As these bikes are getting older and will almost certainly hit some sort of collectable status soon, while at this point most of the dealer records of them are still around, it might behoove you to go to the dealer (or call them) and attempt to get documented history of the paint job - say a copy of the receipt or work order from the dealership to the body shop to repaint it, etc. There are collectable bikes in non-stock colors that ended up more valuable because the dealer painted them - and because they come with proof it was the dealer that did it. Could add a few bucks to the value further down the line, or perhaps even now.

Islandboy,

Is this your only 919? I know you had considered a new Honda 1000, but I never knew if you committed one way or the other.

Cheers!

I've only owed one 919. But wouldn't hesitate to buy another.
At this point I'd probably prefer the Z900rs over the CB1000.
