In a future Top 10 we’ll countdown the most bizarre motorcycle engines, but for this list let us examine the engines that have come to dominate motorcycle power production.

Who writes this stuff? Somebody in a hurry to get to happy hour?
Honda's CB750 was a TRANSVERSE FOUR, not an inline!

Hmmmm...in relation to the drive train being perpendicular to the axle yes, but it is still an inline cylinder layout...so i think your both right. Big daa, you have skin tags that you shear with tin snips...so your margin of victory is better.

I may not have a lot to say but it doesn't mean I don't listen.

Seriously though, an inline four has the crankshaft in line with the wheels. A transverse four puts the crank 90° off the axis of the wheels.

I was just stoked to NOT see a V-Twin at the top of the list.

I think they're both "inline 4" though. One is transverse, one is longitudinal. I took a peak at mine, and indeed the 4 cylinders were all in a line

Huh? I think you have it backwards. Inline fours have the crank sideways, not front to back.

The following are NOT my words.

"A transverse engine is an engine mounted in a vehicle so that the engine's crankshaft axis is perpendicular to the long axis of the vehicle."

Interesting but what I mean is that the crank in the inline four is side to side.

I've got a poster from the Barber Museum with that engine in an exploded view of actual parts laid out on a bench. Really wild looking.

I'm starting to realize, when I see motorcycles like this, that I want a Jay Leno motorcycle-garage. :-(
