Who pays to get their rims scratched?

Apparently, I do.

Took my rims and new tires to a shop last night to finally get rid of the stock tires. I should have inspected them at the shop after they finished mounting...but I didn't. I didn't see the gouges till I was mounting the rear wheel. Shit. They were immaculate.

No biggie in the long run, I guess. Still pisses me off. I took them to a shop so I wouldn't mess them up, but I think I could have done better in my garage.

That sucks. It'll probably bother you every time you look at them now.
I would at least calmly mention it to the shop manager. It's worth a shot.

I at least plan to talk with the guy that did the work. He seemed like a nice guy, but I wonder if maybe he wasn't as experienced on the machine. He looks really young...though I know that doesn't necessarily mean anything. I just wish he'd said something; there's no way he didn't realize what had happened. It seems people rarely own up to their mistakes anymore.

Maybe I can find some touch-up paint in the right color to make it less noticeable. That, or just let the brake dust and road grime build up so I can't see it :/

I'd go with the brake dust + chain lube cover-up

I started doing my own changes this year (on both bikes), and my buddy's. We've ran into a couple of scratches. I don't have any show bikes or anything, I just ride the piss out of them, so not a big deal to me.

I have a local guy that has scratch-free equipment and a scratch-free guarantee. He also only charges $15 for loose ($20 for on bike) tire change and balance. How's that for awesome?

I always inspect my rims before I leave the shop now after they bent my rear rim on me. They owned up to it after I told them and replaced the rim but at least it saves me a trip home and back.

I scratch my own rims lol. Actually I have done about 8 tire changes on my bike and only managed about 2 scratches. I found some close-enough paint on the shelf in my garage. You can see it if look up close but just standing next to the bike you never even know.

I would be more pissed if I paid someone to scratch them.

Remember that most dealerships usually start the new guys off on oil changes & tire swaps. Many of the technicians are dirt riders and don't really care about the condition of the rims before or after. It's more about function than form to them.

Superdog, when is that last time you posted? Seems like ages ago. Welcom back! Now get them to fix your rims.

Sorry about the scuffs. Note that rocks and such will also scratch the rim paint. I found a couple of hairline scratches on my rear rim before my first tire change. If you're really picky and like to blow money like me, Color Rite has the paint. It's the "matte axis gray" for 919 and runs about $40 for a rattle can.

If it was a dealership, mention it to them. The dealership I worked for would do anything to avoid a customer complaint. Might not get new wheels, maybe touch up paint and some free oil changes.

It is important to not delay, call or leave a email ASAP., if you really want them to do something.

Otherwise, "it is what it is"

I've been acquiring equipment this past summer to change my own this winter just for this reason (aside from cost).

I plan to die young, as late as possible.

The same happened to mine, they tagged my wheels, and they didn't even have to remove them from the bike. The fact is, your paying a professional to do the work, they should do it better than we can.....

I'm feeling a little better today, just needed to vent a little I guess. I wasn't able to make time to go back yesterday, but will today. Unfortunately it wasn't a dealership, so not sure to what extent they'll care. I guess I'd be satisfied if they'd refund some of the mounting cost, and help with finding something to touch it up with.

At least they didn't booger up the front wheel.

Thanks for the feedback.

My wife and I went for a ride with a friend of ours yesterday. After just a couple of miles, I didn't care what the wheels looked like; the bike handled so much better! I have PR2s now....my old tires were the 5 year old stockers, and the rear was worn flat in the middle.
Called the manager of the shop today and he told me to bring it in. He looked at it, and agreed it happened there. While I only asked for a partial refund, he refunded the entire mounting cost. I'm more than satisfied, and they've kept my business in the future

I'm going to touch up the wheels, but more interested in riding now while the weather is good!

Thanks for the support, and sorry for the whining. There are others here who have much better reasons to vent, and need our support

Glad it turned out well. And sounds like you've got a reliable place to take your bike.

You can always take pictures (close ups) of your wheels before taking them in. With a cell phone is best, as you could do it right before and it'll have a time stamp.

If they refute that they made a mistake, show them the pics. Then show them the business card of a lawyer and the number to the BBB on speeddial on your phone. They'll change their mind.
