Weekend provisions

So, do we have all we need for a weekend in the garage?

Let's see, 900RR header, R1 can, various sleeves and clamps, I think we might be close...

Nice. I found on mine it made the bike noticeably easier on the slow speed work.

And a lot more noise.

I must try and drop your shock back. Having a shed clear out this weekend and putting a bit on TM. Will try to pop past early next week.

Cheers, man.

I'm not actually at that house at present [domestic dramas, don't ask] but will be back in a couple of weeks, so don't hurry.

Yeah, I'm not after more noise - there's a little baffle that came with the R1 can that I'm going to try and fit - but I have come to like the look of the low-mounts, and it's winter, and I'm having a bit of no family time, so what's a guy to do with his weekends, but crack on with the occasional mod?

Sweet as. Let me know if you want to ride sometime. If you can handle the company of a SuperHawk. Or have a chat if needed.

Finished the pipe yet?

Thanks. The drama's nearly done; the mod is only just getting underway.

I need to trial fit and mark it all up and take it back to the welder for more fabbing...

No, still a way to go on the pipe.

Yes, I've got nothing against Superhawks - I wish Honda had used that motor in a bigger VTR250-type frame - it could have been their Monster, don't you reckon?

And thanks for the offer of a chat - I'm pretty much on the home stretch now...

I was going to paint, but I think I'm not going to, now, given the way they have cleaned up. I'll see what happens to them over time, and maybe consider an HPC coating, eventually.

Well done w yr sale - they seem to be moving only slowly at pres.

So, dropped the shock to get the Y-pipe out of the way, got a mate to head me line up the headers and hold the flanges in place and torqued them down. Couldn't resist the temptation to start the engine - gave it a bit of a run with no muffler at all to hear what the worst possible noise level could be - not completely horrible, to my surprise.

Won't be running it open pipe ever, so at least I know it will be quieter than that, and the R1 can might actually be quite acceptable. We'll see.

Waiting on the metal-worker to fab up a flange / coupling / clamp that I need to be able to put it all together....Yesterday would be good....

Cool. Loved mine, made the bike. It will be quieter than you think. Mine at 100 you could hardly hear the motor. Open it up and it got noisy.

Metal all the way through, first start-up, pleasingly mellow [quieter than I thought, Spokes, u a genius!]. Bracket finalisation coming, along with a ride around the block. All in all, v happy with my little winter project.

Thanks Mike. I'll put up some better photos when I get some, but I'm pretty happy with the outcome - one more clamp than I wanted on view, but what the hey...Might be possible to find a better solution in time.

For the moment, I'm happy with how it looks, and sounds, and goes...

Exhaust 1.1

So, while I was happy with the performance and sound of the R1 can I put on in the winter, I was never really taken with the bluff-ended look of the front of the can, and the pipe-to-can connection was ugly and cumbersome.

So I recently found a cheap GSXR can on the auctions, and set about swapping them over. CF-look wrap and a new header-to-can connecting piece [60mm ID to 50mm OD] was what it took, and tonight I bolted it all up. It has a much closer fit to the bike, is a bit shorter, but overall a nicer installation. The GSXR has an extended heel guard which also shields the clamp from view, so it makes for a much cleaner-looking fit.

I may yet black out some of the bright work, as the lines are a bit too B-King in places for my liking, but overall, a good little swap.

I might miss the wail of the R1 can for a while - this has about the same volume of sound, but a deeper pitch - but I'll get over it.

I wasn't going to advertise them, but yes, I could sell them - the conversion has all worked out well, and it's pretty unlikely that I will ever go back.
