New member here -w/ 06 919

Hi all! New member here.

After several problems with my 84 Nighthawk 700S, I got myself a 2006 919. I'm still working on the DMV/INS and other issues, but hope to be riding by the end of the month.

I have a quick question. The battery was completely dead when I bought the bike. We used jumper cables to start the bike, but every time we removed the cables, the bike died.

We let it warm up a bit, but it still died as soon as we removed the cables.

I know cars can run without a battery, and I expected a bike would as well. This makes me think the alt has a problem.

However, I know that my other bike will discharge under 2500RPM, so I was thinking this bike might be the same.

Q. Will a 06 919 run without a battery?

I don't have the bike stored at my place yet, so I can't run any tests. Haven't even bought a battery yet.

Next question, I've had pretty good luck with cheap batteries on the Nighthawk, is there any reason to buy the big $$ battery or am I going to be fine with the cheaper ones?

Thanks, and I look forward to talking with everyone.

Bike will not run without a battery, period.

Bike will not run with a weak battery, period.

Bike won't run well at all with a relatively weak battery.

Time for a new one...

and Welcome!!!

Thanks Toast! I really love the look, they are pretty hard to find. I was looking at the ZRX, Ducati Monster, 919, and Bandit Naked. Overall the it came down to the 919 and the Monster. I like the looks of both, but the Monster was a bit more $$ for the ones I was looking at.

Some say the 919 is not the best in the twisties, but it's a large step up for me. I come from a Nighthawk 700S and this has 17" tires vs 16" (no radial tires) Short travel single rear shock, adjustable forks and pretty light weight.

So I'm pretty pumped about this summer!

Lol.. A lot of bikes are "not the best" for the twisties. However, the 919 is an excellent canyon carver and is an absolute blast on the track.

Welcome!

Hi and welcome aboard. Regarding the twisties comment, just remember it's not the bike, it's the rider that's more important.

Thanks!

Sckill- ur on the mark there! I actually got pretty good with the old Nighthawk 700S. Took some time to get it down, but I did OK!

Most importantly, I had a blast... And in the end, that's what counts. That is after all the main reason I bought the bike.
